Upcoming AMD FSR 4 Upscaler for PlayStation 5 Pro Unveiled, But Release Delayed

AMD Unveils FSR 4 Technology with RX 9070 Series

Last week, AMD introduced a significant advancement in its upscaling technology through the launch of the RX 9070 series graphics cards. Known as FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), this latest iteration incorporates machine learning into its upscaling algorithm, drawing parallels to Nvidia’s DLSS technology. As PC gamers explore the capabilities of FSR 4, Sony is preparing to integrate similar advancements into its platform.

Collaboration Between AMD and Sony

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Mark Cerny, the lead system architect at Sony, revealed that FSR 4 has emerged from a collaborative initiative named “Project Amethyst”between AMD and Sony. This collaboration aims to bring FSR 4’s cutting-edge upscaling techniques to the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony’s latest console upgrade.

Impressive Results from Project Amethyst

Cerny shared insights into the achievements of this project, stating, “The neural network (and training recipe) in FSR 4’s upscaler are the first results of the Amethyst collaboration. The outcome is remarkable; it offers a more sophisticated approach that can surpass the clarity of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).I’m incredibly proud of our team’s efforts!”

Timeline for PlayStation Integration

PC gamers currently enjoy a robust library of titles supporting FSR 4, with additional games set for release in 2025. In contrast, PlayStation 5 users will have to wait until 2026 to experience similar benefits. Nevertheless, Sony is committed to rolling out its proprietary PSSR technology across several titles in 2025:

“Our focus for 2025 is working with developers to integrate PSSR into their titles; in parallel, though, we have already started to implement the new neural network on PS5 Pro. Our target is to have something very similar to FSR 4’s upscaler available on PS5 Pro for 2026 titles as the next evolution of PSSR; it should take the same inputs and produce essentially the same outputs. Doing that implementation is rather ambitious and time-consuming, which is why you haven’t already seen this new upscaler on PS5 Pro.”

Understanding Hardware Limitations and Future Prospects

Cerny acknowledges the disparity between the hardware capabilities of the PC graphics utilizing FSR 4, which is currently limited to the RDNA 4-based RX 9070 series GPUs, and the architecture of the PlayStation 5 Pro. However, he remains optimistic that the PS5 Pro’s machine learning components will be able to replicate a user experience similar to FSR 4.

Potential Enhancements on the Horizon

Additionally, it appears that Sony is exploring the integration of AMD’s latest advancements in ray tracing efficiency within their systems. Cerny noted, “there’s a lot of opportunity with our Amethyst collaboration, and we recognize that ray tracing is a significant aspect of the graphical future.”This may suggest that any potential hardware upgrades could be earmarked for the anticipated PlayStation 6, rather than the existing models.
