Experience Cutting-Edge Visuals with the New Unreal Engine 5.5 Tech Demo
For enthusiasts of cutting-edge technology and stunning graphics, a new tech demo powered by Unreal Engine 5.5.4 is now available for download. This impressive demonstration, drawing inspiration from iconic works like Blade Runner and other Cyberpunk themes, allows users equipped with compatible hardware to witness advancements in lighting and reflections facilitated by Lumen Global Illumination and ray tracing features.
The Vision Behind the Demo
Created by Pasquale Scionti, this demo originally showcased a Cyberpunk scene utilizing solely dynamic lighting techniques. Initially released using Unreal Engine 5.3, it did not incorporate advanced features such as Lumen, path tracing, or ray tracing. However, with this recent upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.5.4, Scionti has harnessed Lumen for Global Illumination and introduced Hardware Ray Tracing capabilities for Ambient Occlusion, Reflections, and Shadows, elevating the visual quality to impressive new heights.
Performance Considerations
Despite its breathtaking visuals, the demo highlights ongoing challenges in performance demands, even for high-end graphics cards like the NVIDIA RTX 4090. Users can expect to achieve around 60 frames per second at a resolution of 1440p. This limitation underscores a crucial reality: while graphics technology has advanced significantly, our hardware still struggles to keep pace with the demands of these sophisticated lighting techniques.
The State of Unreal Engine and Future Prospects
Unreal Engine 5.5 is making waves in the game development community, powering intriguing projects, including unofficial remasters of beloved classics like Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Skyrim. However, developers have reported that performance on these complex projects often falls short, even on the most robust systems. As noted by Bryan Heemskerk of Massive Damage, when Unreal Engine 5 was first launched, graphics cards were already two generations behind the needs of the engine. It may not be until the upcoming RTX 6000 series that we see a significant improvement in frame rates without sacrificing graphical fidelity.
