Unlocking Tool Slots and Upgrading Crests in Hollow Knight Silksong

In the anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, significant alterations have been made to core gameplay elements, notably the redesign of charms. In this iteration, charms have evolved into equippable tools attached to crests, streamlining the overall gameplay experience.

In the original Hollow Knight, players could easily collect charm notches to equip various charms, allowing for straightforward customization—or even riskier setups for extra challenge. However, Silksong introduces a more intricate system that necessitates strategic planning; acquiring additional tools demands more than just collecting charm notches.

This guide will walk you through the process of upgrading your crests to expand your toolkit and clarify the mechanics at play—particularly useful since I inadvertently spent valuable resources on an incompatible crest.

Unlocking Crest Slots

To gain access to a crest slot, players first need to locate a Memory Locket. These items can be found in various places throughout the game, often in shops or hard-to-reach areas within the world, mirroring the rarity of charm notches.

Once you obtain a Memory Locket, unlocking a new slot is fairly straightforward. Simply rest at a bench and interact with one of the small dots adjacent to the larger circles on your crests to activate it.

Exercise caution as you unlock additional crests, as they provide distinct combat styles that may suit your playstyle better than the default options. Patience is key in experimenting with these before finalizing your decisions.

Each crest corresponds to one of three tool types, indicated by color: red for weaponry, blue for defense, and yellow for exploration. Be mindful of these associations as you make your selections.

Changing Crests

As you advance in the game, you’ll encounter significant cutscenes wherein Hornet adopts new crest styles. After acquiring a new crest, it automatically switches in, leaving you without tools until you reach another bench.

At the bench, you can toggle between crests using the respective button displayed on the bottom left of the crests menu. Each crest can share the same tool, but note that unlocked slots are not transferable between them.

It’s advisable to conserve your Memory Lockets until you’re certain about using a particular crest for an extended period. I myself made the mistake of upgrading the Reaper crest without fully considering my options and regrettably lost that token permanently.

Once you’ve gathered enough tokens and are confident in your chosen crest, feel free to enhance it further, opting for whichever tool category aligns with your playstyle.
