In the realm of role-playing games (RPGs) featuring intricate armor systems, players are presented with a plethora of armor sets, each varied in design and statistical benefits. These sets not only provide different levels of damage mitigation but also grant various enhancements that can affect gameplay.
However, it’s common for players to find certain armor sets visually unappealing. This is where the transmog system—referred to as layered armor in Monster Hunter Wilds—proves invaluable. This feature allows players to combine aesthetic preferences with high-performance stats, delivering a dual benefit in gameplay.
Unlocking the Layered Armor (Transmog System) in MHW
To unlock the layered armor transmog system within Monster Hunter Wilds, you must complete the introductory quest. This entails experiencing the opening cutscenes, followed by a battle against Chatacabra, a toad-like creature located in a cave. Be prepared for it to flee multiple times throughout the encounter—persevere to ultimately defeat it.
Upon vanquishing Chatacabra, a cinematic will play, transporting you to the first camp. Here, engage with three key NPC allies: Nata, Gemma, and Olivia. Then, make your way to the Expedition Command tent. Following another cinematic, your personal tent will be highlighted on the map, granting you access to explore the transmog system.
Equipping Layered Armor in Monster Hunter Wilds
To equip layered armor, visit your personal tent in any camp and navigate to the Appearance Menu. Select the Equipment Appearance option to view available layered armor for each part of your character’s body, from headgear to footwear.
If a body part displays a gray icon, it denotes that no layered armor is currently equipped—this is typical for first-time visits to the menu. Each armor piece features a radio button that allows you to enable or disable the transmog for that specific body part. Disabling transmog will render the actual gear invisible while still retaining its statistical benefits. For instance, if you opt out of layered armor across all parts, your character will wear their starter outfit, albeit with the stats of their equipped armor sets.
To apply a specific appearance over an armor piece, ensure that transmog is activated for that body part, click on the respective icon, and choose from available skins. Remember, if you have no skins available, no options will appear in this menu.
Once you’ve selected your desired skin, return to the previous menu to discover two colored rectangles next to the equipped gear, enabling you to alter the color palette of your selected skin.
After finalizing your preferred skins, you can transition back to the Change Equipment panel within the Equipment Menu of your tent. Importantly, changing an armor piece for a body part that has layered armor will not impact your character’s appearance but will switch the stats associated with the new armor piece.
