Unity and Epic Games Forge Surprise Partnership: Unity Developers Now Can Publish Games Directly in Fortnite

Unity and Epic Games Forge Surprising Partnership at Unite 2025

During the Unite 2025 keynote in Barcelona, Spain, Unity made headlines by welcoming Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney to the stage. This unexpected collaboration between two industry giants marked a significant milestone in the realm of game development, as they each lead the way in the development of third-party game engines.

Collaboration Focused on Open Digital Platforms

Sweeney shared insights from his discussions with Matthew Bromberg, the newly appointed president and CEO of Unity. This dialogue centered around a mutual goal of fostering support for open digital platforms, which is increasingly relevant in today’s rapidly evolving gaming landscape.

New SDK for Enhanced Cross-Platform Experiences

The partnership’s first initiative will introduce Unity’s innovative in-app purchase software development kit (SDK) to developers using Unreal Engine. This integration allows developers to implement this API for managing cross-platform transactions seamlessly. Sweeney emphasized the significance of this advancement, especially as legal pressures are prompting both Google and Apple to make strides toward more open ecosystems for Android and iOS.

Fortnite Expands Ecosystem to Unity Games

Perhaps the most thrilling announcement is that the popular Fortnite ecosystem, which boasts an impressive 500 million registered accounts, is set to embrace games developed with Unity. Sweeney highlighted that:

Fortnite is a huge game that hit 100 million monthly active users last Holiday. And though it began as a little Battle Royale game that we built, over time, it’s evolved into an ecosystem where 40% of playtime is going to third-party content built by independent developers. They’re earning hundreds of millions of dollars a year from participating in Fortnite, and now it’s going to open up to all Unity games thanks to some really amazing network technology that Unity built.

Starting next year, Unity developers will have the exciting opportunity to publish their games directly into Fortnite. This integration means that Unity-crafted titles can be featured in Fortnite’s discovery system alongside those created with Unreal Engine, facilitating participation in the evolving Fortnite economy towards a more interconnected metaverse.

Recent Developments in Fortnite’s Capabilities

In related news, Fortnite recently allowed Island Creators to monetize their content by selling in-game items and offering rewards reminiscent of loot boxes. This move further highlights Epic Games’ commitment to enhancing the user experience and expanding opportunities for developers within the Fortnite ecosystem.
