Unity 6 Game Engine and Tools Official Launch Date Announced for October 17

The renowned game engine company Unity is set to launch the next major version of its engine and tools in just a few weeks. During its Unite developer conference, it was announced that Unity 6 will be available globally on October 16.

According to a press release, Unity 6 will provide developers with enhanced graphics capabilities and “simplified multiplayer game development.”Additionally, it will feature improved tools specifically designed for developers focusing on web browser-based games.

Unity has also revealed a timeline for the initial update of Unity 6. Known as Unity 6.1, this update is expected to roll out in April 2025. The company stated:

Unity 6.1 will expand on the core capabilities of Unity 6, introducing new features such as support for foldable and larger screen formats, Deferred+ rendering in the GPU Resident Drawer, along with new build targets and build profiles.

One of the first confirmed games utilizing Unity 6 is Den of Wolves. This co-op sci-fi first-person shooter is being developed by 10 Chambers, the studio that previously used an earlier version of Unity to create their first game, GTFO. Initially, the team planned to use Unity 2022 LTS for Den of Wolves, but after being impressed with the pre-release features of Unity 6, they switched engines mid-development. You can check out a brief tech demo video of the game on YouTube.

The launch of Unity 6 is particularly crucial for the company, especially as it continues to navigate the backlash from its controversial decision last year to implement a per-install runtime fee for games using its engine. This policy led to significant negative feedback from Unity developers, prompting the company to retract most of those changes. Recently, Unity entirely eliminated the runtime fee from its plans.
