Personally, while I’m always on the lookout for new slashers, I find myself particularly drawn to films set during Halloween, and there’s an upcoming project that perfectly captures this haunting season.

As pumpkins carve their grins and leaves drift from trees, Halloween provides the ideal backdrop for spine-chilling stories. Yet, many films often struggle to distinguish themselves in this vast landscape. However, the concept behind this new horror film has caught my attention, and I’m eager to experience it firsthand.

Milly Shapiro’s Intriguing Horror Film: The Hallowarrior

As Variety recently reported, Milly Shapiro, famed for her role as Charlie Graham in Hereditary, is set to star in The Hallowarrior directed by Ben Sottak. The filmmaker expressed his vision for the project:

“This is a throwback to the crowd-pleasing genre films I grew up watching every Halloween. The movie is dripping with nostalgic fall atmosphere, cheer-inducing kills and a lovable ‘final girl’ played by the brilliant Milly Shapiro. The Hallowarrior follows a character named Pumpkin, who is the last survivor following a catastrophic plague. When external threats emerge, including the character played by Shannyn Sossamon, Thalia, Pumpkin must take up arms and defend herself.

Furthermore, I find it appealing that Sottak describes the film as encompassing a “nostalgic fall atmosphere.” I’m curious to see how he intertwines themes of apocalyptic devastation with one of the most cherished times of the year. Perhaps Pumpkin finds solace in the woods, surrounded by vibrant autumn foliage, and dons those cozy sweaters that are destined to get bloodied as the story unfolds. Setting the narrative against a backdrop of autumnal beauty juxtaposed with loss—following a plague—adds layers to its emotional resonance. Another personal favorite is Trick ‘r Treat, the 2007 anthology horror film that beautifully weaves multiple Halloween tales. As a fan eagerly anticipating Trick ‘r Treat 2, I appreciate how it captures diverse aspects of Halloween—from indifferent characters to friends dressing up for the festivities. Its villain, Sam, with his burlap sack mask reminiscent of a pumpkin, is the very essence of Halloween spirit.

Recently, I also enjoyed Carved, a delightful and campy Huluween film released in October 2024. Given my affinity for Halloween horror films, it’s safe to say that The Hallowarrior is poised to join my annual rotation of fright-filled favorites, as reiterated by its writer/director.
