Transitioning from traditional roguelikes to Hyper Light Breaker can be quite a shift, particularly when it comes to navigating the Skill Tree. At first glance, the structure may seem off-putting and somewhat enigmatic.
The Skill Tree comprises several tiers that include slots for enhancements, yet the functionality and benefits of these branches may not be immediately clear. However, understanding how to effectively utilize the Skill Tree is crucial, as it offers the most significant means for permanent progression within the game.
This guide aims to demystify the Skill Tree, detailing how to advance, unlock new abilities, and clarify the functions of various upgrades.
Unlocking Nodes

To begin unlocking nodes, approach Pherus Bit, located directly in front of the Spawn area. Initially, you may notice a range of options available to unlock, but these are contingent on acquiring Golden Rations.
Golden Rations can be obtained through two primary methods: by resetting the game world and cashing in your levels along with some currency, or by exploring underground labs scattered throughout the overgrowth.
Keep in mind that these labs only yield a single ration, and instances of spawning are limited (often no more than four per game seed). Therefore, it’s advisable to capitalize on your opportunities before resetting the world.
Once you’ve secured your Golden Rations, return to Pherus Bit, select the Skill Tree tab, and activate any small diamond corresponding to the node you wish to unlock, contingent on having reached the requisite tier.
It’s essential to note that you can only unlock a node if all preceding nodes in its path have been accessed. The first nodes often require two slots, but subsequent nodes typically only cost one. These slots determine the number of active skills you can maintain; it’s important to have adequate slots available even if you’ve unlocked a skill, as it cannot be active without sufficient slots.
Unlocking Tiers

The Skill Tree consists of five tiers, each interspersed with slots that can be unlocked for better skill allocation, though unlocking these slots is not a prerequisite for advancing to the next tier.
Unlocking tiers requires Cores instead of Golden Rations, with Cores being more accessible through exploration within the overgrowth, often discovered in Stashes without any special requirements.
It’s necessary to unlock each preceding tier before progressing; thus, to access enticing options in Tier 5, you must first unlock Tiers 2, 3, and 4. However, you don’t need to activate previous tier abilities, allowing you to advance as long as you possess Cores.
Skill Explanations
Each skill in the Skill Tree offers a unique effect, applicable in every run regardless of the character or weapon used, provided the skill is active. This versatility makes the Skill Tree a valuable investment in your gameplay.
Some skill descriptions may be too vague for those unfamiliar with the game mechanics. Therefore, let’s clarify each unique skill across the different tiers.
