Warning! This article contains spoilers for Silo Season 2.
Silo Season 2 has unfolded with a wealth of captivating plot twists, notably centering on a perplexing protocol known as the Safeguard. The term is initially introduced when Lukas decrypts fragments from Salvador Quinn’s letter, which ominously states, “They created the safeguard.”This statement hints at a strategy implemented by the founders to maintain order within the silos. Despite Lukas’s endeavors, both he and the audience remain largely in the dark regarding the true nature of the Safeguard until crucial revelations take place.
As the season concludes, it becomes apparent that the Safeguard holds significant implications for the residents of Silo 18. While main characters like Bernard and Lukas delve into its mysteries, Juliette learns about it through Solo’s recollections. Although several elements of this protocol remain unclear, the show provides enough details for viewers to piece together the sinister motivations behind it.
The Safeguard Procedure: A Threat to Life in the Silo
An Extreme Protocol Designed to Terminate Silos

In episode 9 of Season 2, Lukas discovers hidden tunnels beneath Silo 18, insight gained from Salvador Quinn’s letter. As he approaches the imposing tunnel entrance, he is warned by an entity known as “The Algorithm”that discussing what he discovers may trigger the Safeguard. This warning indicates that the Safeguard serves as a drastic measure capable of annihilating an entire silo.
During the Safeguard protocol, a lethal poison is released into a silo via a pipe linked to an external source. Just before Juliette departs from Silo 17 in the finale, Solo abruptly recalls the details of this sinister procedure after encountering a note about it at home. He explains that when activated, the Safeguard can eliminate the entire population of a silo, targeting those who defy the founders’ regulations. Armed with this knowledge, Juliette hurries back to Silo 18, fearing that time may be running out to save her community.
Who Wields Control Over The Safeguard Procedure?
The Algorithm: Determining the Fate of a Silo

Season 2 reveals that the Algorithm monitors intricate patterns and conditions within a silo, ultimately deciding whether it is worth preserving or condemning. This advanced AI, developed by the founders, seems to govern the silos in alignment with their envisioned order. Nevertheless, the Algorithm’s behavior occasionally resembles human decision-making, leading to speculation about the involvement of a human presence behind the scenes.
For instance, its apparent choice of Camille as Silo 18’s new leader at the season’s close suggests that the Algorithm has been evaluating her performance and suitability for leadership. Additionally, Bernard mentions the existence of 51 silos, raising suspicions that a more malignant force may be utilizing one silo to observe and influence the others through the Algorithm’s findings.
How Can the Safeguard Procedure Be Averted?
Solo’s Insight: How Juliette Can Save Her Silo

Following his explanation of the Safeguard, Solo reveals that simply blocking the pipe facilitating the poison release can halt the procedure. While he doesn’t detail how others in his silo managed to obstruct the pipe, Juliette’s ingenuity and engineering expertise lead viewers to believe she will concoct a method to do the same. Her resourcefulness throughout the series supports the notion that sealing the dangerous pipe is within her capabilities.

Solo Identifies the Pipe’s Location in Silo 17

Before Juliette departs, Solo confirms that the critical pipe is situated on the 14th level of Silo 17. Given the seemingly consistent architectural designs of the silos, it is reasonable to assume that a similar setup exists within Silo 18. Unfortunately, as Solo attempts to guide Juliette to the pipe, the structural tremors from an explosion divert their path, prompting him to urge her to return to Silo 18 swiftly.
Did Jimmy’s Parents Successfully Thwart the Safeguard Procedure?
Indications That Solo’s Parents Saved Silo 17’s Residents

Solo narrates that his mother worked on level 14 of Silo 17 and mysteriously failed to return home during a rebellion, possibly insinuating she attempted to block the poison pipe. He also claims that his father uncovered a means to render the external environment safe, as Silo 17’s inhabitants initially appeared unharmed upon their exit. However, tragedy struck when they were subsequently overwhelmed by a toxic dust wave that claimed their lives.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hugh Howey’s Silo books.
According to the original Silo novels by Hugh Howey, it is revealed that lethal nanobots are activated within silos to terminate all inhabitants deemed unsustainable. These same nanobots mixed with argon gas are present in the airlock chambers, ensuring that any exposed cleaners soon experience fatal consequences. Notably, the books also indicate that these nanobots are capable of being reprogrammed to heal rather than harm. Solo’s storyline in Silo Season 2 offers a glimpse that his father might have found a way to adjust the nanobots, but the outer environment they encountered instead contained fatal agents leading to their demise.
