Understanding the Burning Monolith in Path of Exile 2

The Burning Monolith serves as a unique map within the expansive Atlas of Worlds in Path of Exile 2. Comparable to the Realmgate, this area offers players a chance to embark on a challenging quest, though it isn’t easily accessed.

To unlock the Burning Monolith, players must collect three special items known as Crisis Fragments. Acquiring these fragments requires the completion of Citadels—specific, hard-to-locate map nodes on the Atlas.

Upon entering the Burning Monolith for the first time, players will initiate a quest titled The Pinnacle of Flame. This quest breaks down into three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Successfully completing all three Citadels rewards players with the requisite Crisis Fragments needed to challenge the Arbiter of Ash, the endgame pinnacle boss.

Before engaging in this battle, players should meticulously consider their build. The Arbiter of Ash presents a formidable challenge, boasting extensive health and devastating combat capabilities.

Discovering Citadels in Path of Exile 2

There are three distinct Citadels in Path of Exile 2: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel has its own map boss, which must be defeated to obtain the corresponding Crisis Fragment. However, the primary challenge lies in locating these Citadels within the Atlas.

Citadels can only be attempted once, and since each player’s Atlas is randomly generated, their placements offer no predictable pattern, making them a bit elusive. Nonetheless, players have developed a few strategies to enhance their chances of discovery:

  1. Select a Direction: Progress consistently in one direction on the Atlas, utilizing Towers for a broader view of the maps.
  2. Follow the Corruption: Keep an eye out for corrupted nodes at the edge of your visibility. Clear these areas, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat the process. This can synergize with the first tip.
  3. Cluster Discovery: Citadels may appear in proximity to one another. If you encounter one, the others might not be far behind.

Hunting for Citadels can be a drawn-out task best suited for late-game scenarios when your character’s build is optimized, making boss encounters more manageable and instinctual.

If you prefer to bypass the lengthy hunt for Crisis Fragments, they can be obtained through trading websites or Currency Exchanges. However, their rarity typically drives up prices, making purchasing an option worth considering to save time and effort.
