Summary
- Master Tengen’s barrier effectively contains cursed energy within Japan.
- The sorcerer’s immortality is crucial for the continued function of the barrier.
- Star plasma vessels are essential to reset Tengen’s growing powers to maintain balance.
In the universe of Jujutsu Kaisen, various mechanisms exist to shield ordinary humans from the threat of cursed spirits, among which Master Tengen’s barrier stands out as a critical protective measure. The Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc vividly illustrates just how catastrophic a breach of this barrier can be.
Master Tengen’s immortality is not merely a personal attribute; it plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the barrier that encapsulates Japan, effectively imprisoning much of the world’s cursed energy. Yet, this power is a double-edged sword. If left unchecked, Tengen’s abilities can become too potent, necessitating the absorption of a Star Plasma Vessel—a human with whom Tengen can merge to reset their capabilities.
Master Tengen’s Barrier: The Guardian Against Cursed Spirits
How Immortality Sustains the Barrier

Tengen oversees multiple barriers designed to shield humanity from malevolent cursed spirits. The foremost of these barriers surrounds Japan, effectively trapping cursed energy within its confines and contributing to the high concentration of jujutsu sorcerers and cursed spirits residing there. Within this framework exists a smaller barrier that cloaks Tokyo Jujutsu High, cleverly rearranging its buildings to obscure the existence of the “cursed warehouse,”a crucial repository for cursed objects.
At the heart of this warehouse lies an elevator leading deep into the Tomb of the Star, a labyrinthine network of passages culminating in a revered sacred tree. Here, Tengen’s most secure barrier resides, isolating the sorcerer and permitting entry only to select individuals invited by Tengen.
Tengen’s formidable cursed technique stems from their enduring existence of more than a millennium. However, this remarkable longevity incurs a significant risk: with time, Tengen’s accumulated cursed energy can overwhelm their consciousness, transforming them into an entity of immense, potentially uncontrollable power.
The Role of Star Plasma Vessels in Power Reset
Preparing Vessels from Birth for the Assimilation Process

To avert the potential chaos of an overpowered sorcerer, Master Tengen requires a periodic reset of their power levels. Enter the concept of the Star Plasma Vessel—a human uniquely compatible with Tengen, capable of merging with the sorcerer. This fusion effectively rewrites Tengen’s biological data, akin to a process of reincarnation.
The preparation for this vital role starts at birth. Star plasma vessels lead highly restricted lives, limited in social interactions and experiences to prevent attachment to the human realm, which might dissuade them from undergoing the necessary assimilation.
Each vessel is attended to by a caretaker, who assumes multiple responsibilities including providing nourishment, administering care in times of illness, and safeguarding the vessel from potential threats. These caretakers embody a hybrid of both nurturing figures and vigilant protectors.
Conflicting Interests: Two Factions Against Assimilation
Targeted Efforts by Two Groups

While the assimilation of the star plasma vessel seems beneficial for humanity, two notable factions vehemently oppose this process: the Q Group and the Star Religious Group.
The Q Group is comprised of curse users who challenge the prevailing jujutsu establishment. Their objective is to prevent the star plasma vessel’s assimilation under the belief that failure to reset Tengen’s powers could lead to catastrophic consequences—enabling Tengen to threaten humanity and Jujutsu High alike. Such an upheaval would grant curse users a license to act without restraint against jujutsu sorcerers.
In contrast, the Star Religious Group venerates Master Tengen as a deity. With roots traced back to Tengen’s practices during the Nara period, this faction reveres the sorcerer, disseminating Buddhist principles that underpin modern jujutsu teachings. However, a sect of Tengen’s most fervent followers—known as the Children of the Star—advocate for preserving Tengen’s unblemished state, desirous of a divine ascension, even if it risks unleashing Tengen’s full powers upon the world.
The Q Group can deploy curse users to target the star plasma vessel directly, while the Children of the Star, lacking significant combat capabilities, often seek outside help from the underworld of curse users to defend against attacks by sorcerers, who are bound by their duty to protect non-sorcerers, regardless of their intentions.
