Earlier this year, Netflix premiered the first season of 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of Cixin Liu’s celebrated Remembrance of Earth’s Past series. This reimagining of an alternate-history narrative explores the consequences of Earth’s contact with a menacing extraterrestrial race. The cast includes Jess Hong, Eiza González, John Bradley, Alex Sharp, and Jovan Adepo, portraying a collective of scientists and allies designated as the Oxford Five. As Earth braces for the impending San-Ti invasion, these characters become embroiled in the surrounding conspiracies. The San-Ti, originating from a solar system plagued by a three-body problem, are compelled to escape their dying world and seek refuge on Earth, following a distressing message unknowingly transmitted by a human scientist in the 1970s.

Sophons are introduced in Episode 5 and are described as extraordinarily powerful supercomputers condensed to the size of protons. The technologically superior Trisolarians can manipulate cosmic dimensions and generate the energy to create these proton-sized supercomputers. On Earth, sophons serve as instruments of surveillance and psychological manipulation for the San-Ti, often unseen by human observers yet capable of materializing human-like projections for communication purposes, voiced by Sea Shimooka, in the series.

“It’s a proton. One we have turned into a sentient computer,” encapsulates the essence of sophons’ technology.

The narrative reveals how the San-Ti utilize sophons as a means to stifle Earth’s scientific endeavors, laying the groundwork for an unhindered invasion. Early in the series, viewers witness how sophons manipulate events, exemplified by a countdown visible only to Auggie, disrupting her nanotechnology. Additionally, phenomena like blinking stars signal further instances of sophons’ interference.

By Episode 5, it’s disclosed that the San-Ti developed four sophons—two stationed on Earth and two accompanying their fleet. This capability enables the San-Ti to monitor events on Earth in real-time, making them uniquely equipped to thwart any counteractions against their fleet.

“They entered your solar system months ago. We sent them to your planet, to the places where your best minds explore reality at its most fundamental level. And we will destroy the science that could defeat us,” starkly emphasizes the San-Ti’s strategic intent.

The Role of Sophons in the Future of 3 Body Problem

3 Body Problem Setting

As preparations intensify to counter the San-Ti’s threat, the challenges become apparent. How can humanity conquer a foe that perceives every move as it occurs? Sophons represent one of humanity’s most formidable obstacles in this impending conflict. A pivotal strategy emerged at the season’s conclusion: the Wallfacer Project, selecting three of Earth’s top strategists, endowing them with unrestricted authority to devise countermeasures against the San-Ti. However, they must keep their plans confidential; revealing them risks detection by the sophons.

In the finale, Saul is chosen as one of these Wallfacers, though he initially declines the role, leading those around him to mistakenly believe this is part of a larger strategy.

Audiences can look forward to the unveiling of Saul’s plans and those of the other Wallfacers in upcoming seasons. Netflix’s adaptation is set to span an additional two to three seasons, extending the narrative to encompass the remaining installments of Liu’s trilogy, including The Dark Forest and Death’s End.

3 Body Problem is available for streaming on Netflix.
