Understanding Rez in Hyper Light Breaker: How It Functions

Hyper Light Breaker is not designed for the timid player. As you navigate the sprawling landscapes of the Overgrowth, expect death to be a frequent occurrence, especially in the initial stages of the game. This title features a procedurally generated environment, seamlessly blending elements from roguelikes and extraction games, creating an immersive experience perfect for cooperative play with up to two friends.

After your first demise, a counter labeled Rez will appear on your screen, leaving many newcomers puzzled about its significance, especially concerning its depletion. Below, we clarify precisely how the Rez system operates in Hyper Light Breaker.

Understanding the Rez Mechanic in Hyper Light Breaker

At the core of Hyper Light Breaker’s design is the World Cycle mechanic. This gameplay loop operates under a clear sequence:

  • Utilize the Telepad located in Cursed Outpost to access the Overgrowth.
  • Engage in combat with various enemies and gather new weapons and gear to enhance your character’s abilities.
  • Collect Prisms to unlock and defeat the formidable Crown Bosses.
  • Once you’ve vanquished the Crown Bosses, prepare to confront the Abyss King, then embark on a new World Cycle for a fresh adventure.

While this concept may seem intuitive, the actual progression through the gameplay is often fraught with challenges. Expect multiple failures before you encounter the Abyss King, which is where the Rez system becomes essential.

Rez quantifies the number of times you can resurrect within a particular run through the Overgrowth. Each World Cycle begins with four Rez charges, consuming one charge for every death you incur. Once all four charges are depleted, repairing the Telepad with collected resources becomes necessary to progress to the next World Cycle.

Starting a new World Cycle creates an entirely new map for you to explore, offering fresh challenges and opportunities.

Once your Rez charges are depleted, access to the Telepad will be denied until repairs are completed. Approach Pherus Bit, who can be found nearby the Telepad, and select the “Create New World Composition” option to initiate repairs.

The cost for repairing the Telepad will be displayed, varying depending on your available Bright Blood or other materials. However, you need not fret about resource scarcity—Hyper Light Breaker ensures players can transition to a new world, regardless of Bright Blood levels. Upon initiating the repair, players also receive a Golden Ration based on their currency and rank.

For those just starting, it’s advisable to acquire new weapons or gear from vendors before recycling the world for the next cycle. This preparation can provide a significant advantage going forward.

Upon successful repairs, the Telepad will be functional again, allowing you to return to the Overgrowth. You will begin in an underground bunker, where free equipment awaits from a nearby skeleton. From there, take the elevator back up and continue your battle against the Abyss King.
