In the gripping narrative of The Couple Next Door, actors Alfred Enoch and Eleanor Tomlinson portray Pete and Evie, a couple whose aspirations for a harmonious life are jeopardized by their new neighbors. The story unfolds as Pete and Evie transition into a new community, ready to build a family, only to have their dreams destabilized by their charismatic, yet dangerous neighbors, Danny (Sam Heughan) and Becka (Jessica De Gouw).
This series marks a significant milestone in Enoch’s career, as he previously captivated audiences in shows such as How To Get Away With Murder and Foundation on Apple TV+. He gained initial fame for his role as Dean Thomas in the iconic Harry Potter franchise. Tomlinson, equally formidable, has left her mark in popular series including Arrow, Dracula, and Pennyworth.
As The Couple Next Door arrives on STARZ, ScreenRant had a conversation with Enoch and Tomlinson to delve into the complexities of their characters’ relationship, the allure of temptation, and if Enoch would consider returning to the wizarding world in a potential reboot.
The Arrival of The Couple Next Door on STARZ
“We’re Excited for American Audiences to Finally See This…”

ScreenRant: The show debuted in Fall 2023 on Channel 4, and now, over a year later, it’s being introduced to a broader audience through STARZ. How does it feel to share this project with a larger platform?
Eleanor Tomlinson: It’s incredibly exciting! We’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance for the American audience to experience this. I genuinely believe it will resonate with them as it’s an entertaining show, and I’m thrilled it’s finally coming to light.
Alfred Enoch: Absolutely! It’s fantastic that viewers in the U.S. get to enjoy it. The lifecycle of a show is often prolonged by the filming and post-production phases, so having this opportunity to reach a new audience feels like a real gift.
The Testing of Pete & Evie’s Relationship
“Evie Is Experiencing a Rebellious Phase…”

ScreenRant: Alfred, your portrayal of Pete frustrated me due to his apparent absence in his relationship with Evie. Is this trait deliberate? Is he conscious of his emotional withdrawal, or is it a growing distance he’s unaware of?
Alfred Enoch: Pete’s distance goes beyond his relationship—it’s reflective of his entire life. His passivity is quite compelling. He reached a point where he assumed everything would simply progress smoothly because he had found a wonderful partner. However, he soon discovers that relationships require effort, and he hasn’t put in that work. When he finally realizes his dissatisfaction, it’s almost too late for him to reclaim what he has lost.
ScreenRant: Eleanor, what encourages Evie’s vulnerability to Danny’s advances?
Eleanor Tomlinson: Given Evie’s experiences, she finds herself feeling particularly lost. After being with Pete since university, the dynamic has shifted, and their relationship, though loving, has lost its initial spark, particularly following a traumatic event. In her rebellious state, Evie seeks external validation and excitement, which Danny represents—an enticing alternative to her stagnant life.
Alfred Enoch’s Perspective on a Possible Harry Potter Return
“I’d Rather Not Be a Mentor…”

ScreenRant: With the Harry Potter reboot underway and featuring an entirely new cast, if given the opportunity to return as a professor or mentor, would you be interested?
Alfred Enoch: I must confess, I don’t know if I have enough experience to act as a mentor. They’d likely need someone else for that role.
ScreenRant: I believe you’d make an excellent Hogwarts professor, perhaps teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Alfred Enoch: That sounds fantastic! Although, considering how brief those roles tend to be, I suppose it would just be for one season.
The Potential for Enoch & Tomlinson to Return for Season 2
“It Would Depend on the Scripts…”

Eleanor Tomlinson: Personally, I feel we explored the essence of Pete and Evie fully. Their evolution moving forward would really depend on future scripts.
Alfred Enoch: The circumstances surrounding their characters at the series’ close create quite a difficult scenario for them to recover from. It almost feels like a Jacobean tragedy, where the conclusion often leaves characters in dire straits. Reinventing their story beyond this point poses significant challenges, but it also allows their story to resonate more deeply.
