In the intricate world of Demon Slayer, each demon boasts a distinctive ability known as Blood Demon Art. The enigmatic Muzan Kibutsuji, recognized as the King of Demons, also wields such a power. However, his elusive nature and the deadly fate awaiting challengers have left many ignorant of the specifics of his abilities.
Interestingly, Muzan’s Blood Demon Art, known as biokinesis, is not exclusive to him. Rather, it is an ability that all demons possess, but to a significantly lesser extent than Muzan himself.
What Is Biokinesis?
Muzan: A Living Weapon

Muzan’s unique biokinesis grants him unparalleled control over his physical form, enabling him to morph and modify his body as needed. This includes abilities such as shapeshifting, rearranging his internal organs, and even generating new organs for attack and defense. A fitting comparison would be to a Tyranid from the Warhammer 40, 000 universe—an entity capable of rapid adaptation and evolution according to the situation.
Throughout Demon Slayer, Muzan’s biokinetic abilities allow for a multitude of transformations. Though he typically presents as a male figure, he has been known to take on the appearances of women or children, complicating the task of his adversaries in identifying and confronting him.
In the Infinity Castle Arc, viewers witness compelling demonstrations of Muzan’s biokinesis. After receiving Lady Tamayo’s poisonous injection—designed to revert him to human form—he innovatively transforms himself into a gigantic cocoon to neutralize the toxin. Unlike most demons, Muzan cannot be defeated merely through decapitation. His body houses seven hearts and five brains, all of which must be targeted by Nichirin blades simultaneously to ensure his demise. During an anticipated confrontation, he can also generate several bladed whips from his upper body, each under his individual control.
A particularly unsettling application of biokinesis is Muzan’s capability to disintegrate into countless fragments, allowing him to escape and later reconstruct himself. After encountering Yoriichi in chapter 187, “Innocent Person, ”Muzan employed this ability as a survival tactic, indicating that all fragments must be destroyed to eliminate him; Yoriichi noted he had only managed to cut 1500 out of 1800 pieces, as the surviving 300 pieces—approximately the size of a human head—ensured Muzan’s survival.

Biokinesis in Other Demons

While all demons possess some degree of biokinesis, they are nowhere near as proficient as Muzan. Other demons creatively integrate biokinesis into their Blood Demon Art. For instance, Gyokko, Upper Rank Five, manifests additional infant-like arms sprouting from his torso while possessing the ability to compact himself into his pots for teleportation.
Another fascinating example is Susamaru, who launched an assault on Tanjiro and his companions with temari handballs in episode 8. By generating extra pairs of arms, Susamaru increases her attack speed, allowing for a flurry of temaris to rain down on her foes.
The Limits of Muzan’s Biokinesis
Muzan’s Creative Restrictions

Contrary to popular belief, Muzan is not invincible. His biokinesis has certain constraints. He can only manipulate his body and create organic materials; he cannot innovate with inorganic substances. This limitation means he cannot transform his skin into diamond-like armor to withstand the cutting power of Nichirin blades wielded by skilled Demon Slayers.
Furthermore, regardless of the modifications he makes to his body, Muzan remains fatally susceptible to sunlight. No amount of body alteration—be it growing extra layers of skin or extensive hair—can spare him from sunlight’s lethal effects. Any organic material he generates will disintegrate upon contact with sunlight, proving that alteration within his body cannot alleviate his inherent vulnerabilities.
For those eager to follow more of Demon Slayer, the series is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix. The premiere date for the next season, focusing on the Infinity Castle Arc, has yet to be revealed.
