Understanding Lance Reddick’s Charon’s Survival in Ballerina: An Explanation

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is the inaugural spinoff from the renowned John Wick franchise, which has so far produced four feature films. This highly anticipated series is slated to debut on June 5, 2025, and will explore the story of Eve Macarro, a ballerina-turned-assassin and a critical ally of John Wick.

In the series, Macarro will be training the assassins of the Ruska Roma while simultaneously seeking vengeance for her slain family members. The official synopsis for the series reads:

“A young female assassin seeks revenge against the people who killed her family.”

The first trailer for the series was recently released, revealing an exciting surprise for fans: Lance Reddick’s character, Charon, is set to appear. Charon served as the concierge of The Continental in New York City and was another ally to John Wick. His character met his demise earlier in John Wick: Chapter 4.

Tragically, Lance Reddick passed away at the age of 60 last year due to coronary artery disease and atherosclerotic heart disease. However, his scenes were filmed prior to his passing, and Ballerina is positioned between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4.

Thus, Charon’s character will feature in the forthcoming series.

Lance Reddick’s Charon Joins Ballerina

Charon was killed by Marquis de Gramont, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, during John Wick: Chapter 4. The unexpected return of Reddick’s character in this spinoff came as a shock to many fans.

However, this twist stems from the timeline of Ballerina. Since the movie takes place before Charon’s death in John Wick: Chapter 4, Reddick’s character will still be alive and is expected to play a significant role in the new film.

In Ballerina, Charon continues to serve as the dedicated concierge of The Continental Hotel, a role that audiences have come to admire. Although fans are aware of his character’s fate, they will be able to enjoy Charon in all his glory in this upcoming movie.

The inclusion of Reddick’s character serves as a poignant tribute, expected to further elevate the anticipation surrounding Ballerina. The trailer showcases Charon as the concierge at The Continental, a sanctuary for assassins that plays a vital role in the protagonist’s journey.

Eve Macarro will be seeking refuge at The Continental, a location where John Wick has sought shelter many times. Moreover, as an orphan, she was taken in by Ian McShane’s Winston Scott, who also survived the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.

Driven by revenge against her family’s murderers, Macarro’s transformation into a trained assassin is expected to weave her narrative seamlessly into the wider John Wick universe.

Beyond Charon and Winston Scott, other characters will also appear in Ballerina. Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as John Wick, while Anjelica Huston will portray The Director, a new character within the John Wick franchise.

In summary, the presence of various characters, particularly Charon despite his death, is attributed to the timeline of Ballerina. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina will hit theaters on June 5, 2025.
