Understanding ‘Abandonment of Person Followed by Death’: Three Charged in Liam Payne’s Case

In a significant development in the investigation surrounding the tragic death of Liam Payne, Argentine authorities have charged three individuals with serious offenses including abandonment of a person followed by death and the unlawful provision of narcotics to the former One Direction member during his stay in Argentina.

The accused trio, consisting of a friend, a drug supplier, and a hotel staff member, had previously been detained by law enforcement agents during coordinated raids on their residences. On November 7, officials announced that formal charges had been filed against them.

Abandonment and Drug-Related Charges In Liam Payne Investigation

The friend, who prosecutors claim was consistently with Liam during his travels in Argentina, faces the charge of abandonment of a person followed by death. This charge applies in scenarios where an individual knowingly abandons another person, leading to their demise. Under Argentine law, such an offense carries a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Reports from the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No. 14 clarify that these charges stem from a thorough investigation into Payne’s death, which occurred on October 16 after he fell from a hotel balcony located in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires. A translated statement from El Mundo outlines the illicit activities discovered that resulted in these charges.

“Within the framework of the investigation into the death of British musician Liam James Payne, which occurred on October 16 when he fell from a balcony in a hotel in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo, illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics.”

The friend who was traveling with Liam Payne is specifically implicated in the charge of abandonment. The hotel employee and the drug supplier are charged with providing narcotics to the singer. Notably, toxicology reports indicate that Liam had traces of cocaine, prescription antidepressants, and alcohol in his system, suggesting he may have consumed these substances in the days leading up to his death.

The investigation has also dismissed initial speculations regarding suicide. Findings suggest that all injuries incurred by Payne were consistent with a fall from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel, effectively ruling out both self-inflicted harm and any third-party interference.

Additionally, the prosecutor’s office revealed that the position of Payne’s body at the scene indicated he may have been in a state of semi-consciousness at the time of the incident.

Following his death, Liam Payne’s remains were transported back to the UK, landing at Heathrow Airport on November 7. This process experienced delays due to the ongoing investigation. As of now, details regarding his funeral arrangements remain private, with no public announcements from the family regarding the burial.
