Attention: This article includes SPOILERS for Goosebumps: The Vanishing.
The storyline of Goosebumps: The Vanishing takes time to unravel the mystery surrounding Matty and his friends’ fates in 1994. Eventually, the narrative delivers a coherent explanation that, while distinct, diverges from the events of the first season. Although the 2023 adaptation features fresh faces and a completely original plot, it may leave some fans yearning for closure regarding the unresolved cliffhanger from the inaugural season.
Fortunately, the creators have hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that future seasons could potentially bring back characters from both the first season and Goosebumps: The Vanishing. For now, the latest chapter in the Goosebumps franchise centers around botanist Anthony Brewer, played by David Schwimmer, who delves into the baffling 30-year-old disappearance of his teenage brother, Matty.
Matty & His Friends Have Been in Alien Pods Since 1994
Anthony Rescues Matty, Hannah, and Their Friends
In a climactic twist, the season finale reveals that Matty, Hannah, and their peers have been ensnared in alien pods since 1994. Initially presumed deceased, they were, in fact, alive, though in a state of stasis without aging. Within the depths of Camp Nightmare, Anthony becomes ensnared by Dr. Ramona Pamani, who orchestrates these eerie experiments. She sends a group of teens, including Cece, Devin, Frankie, Trey, Alex, and CJ, to rescue him, cautioning them against lingering too long. Ultimately, the teens manage to liberate themselves and Anthony from captivity.
As Anthony succeeds in freeing Matty and the others, they appear to be unchanged, seemingly the same teenagers from 1994. In an emotional reunion, Matty reassures Anthony that he is not culpable for his long-standing disappearance. Conversely, Devin faces an eerie situation with Hannah, who previously manifested to him as a spectral figure controlled by alien spores, summoning the narrative’s darker undertones.
Why Matty and His Friends Transform into Alien Creatures
The Fusion with Alien DNA Triggered Transformations
Shortly after their escape, the teens undergo a shocking transformation into alien creatures. In a narrative nod to previous Goosebumps installments, this unexpected twist catches viewers off guard. Just when viewers believe the characters are adjusting to contemporary life, they suddenly shift into ravenous beings, intent on imprisoning Cece, Devin, and other peers from Gravesend. The foreshadowing emerges when Dr. Pamani revives her father, who quickly undergoes a similar transformation.
The alien spaceship, having been taken by Dr. Pamani and her team, becomes self-defensive, holding humans hostage as it seeks to protect its autonomy. Dr. Pamani’s father ominously warns her to “Let it go,”indicating that the binding connection between humans and the alien captors has profound consequences. As the humans are kept in pods for extended periods, their DNA begins to merge with that of the alien ship, explaining the rapid transformations observed—specifically why Pamani’s father changes shortly after being revived, while the teens from decades later undergo gradual metamorphosis.
The Fate of Matty and His Friends Following the Alien Ship’s Departure
Matty and His Friends Depart with the Alien Craft
As the finale unfolds, Anthony and Jen scramble to liberate the alien ship before it irrevocably converts Alex, CJ, Trey, and Frankie into extraterrestrial entities. Their efforts succeed but result in sorrowful consequences. Matty, Hannah, and the other 1994 survivors accompany the aliens into space, their humanity now intertwined with their captors. Although Goosebumps season 1 concluded on an ambiguous note, Goosebumps: The Vanishing provides closure, as Matty bids his brother to “let go.”
In the final moments, a bittersweet farewell unfolds as Alex, Trey, CJ, and Frankie part ways with Cece, Devin, and Anthony. Devin expresses his intention to return to Gravesend High, much to Frankie’s delight, as they rekindle their bond. Yet, a lingering concern remains, particularly for Trey, who had been subjected to an alien pod earlier in the season without transformation. In a final, alarming twist, Trey expels an alien slug, suggesting that the cycle may be far from over.
