On October 13, 2024, Episode 4 of The Penguin debuted on HBO, unveiling one of the lesser-known characters in the DC Comics universe: Magpie, whose real name is Margaret Pye, or simply Mag. This supervillain has made her mark in various comic book narratives published by DC.

In this fourth installment of the inaugural season, the storyline focuses on Magpie’s connection to Sofia, a character who finds herself imprisoned in Arkham Asylum due to a conspiracy orchestrated by Carmine. Sofia’s time in the asylum is marked by terrible mistreatment, including the use of electroshock therapy, resulting in significant changes to her mental state.

These traumatic experiences lead Sofia down a dark path, culminating in a shocking act where she takes the life of her cellmate, Magpie.

Exploring Magpie’s Role in the HBO Series and DC Comics

Magpie’s first appearance in The Penguin series showcases her relationship with Sofia, highlighting the gruesomeness of Arkham Asylum where Magpie ultimately meets her end at Sofia’s hands.

Tracing Magpie’s origin in the comics, she made her debut in The Man of Steel #3, released in November 1986, thanks to the creativity of writer John Byrne.

Her character saw a resurgence in 2011 during the DC’s New 52 initiative, where she was featured as a member of the Secret Society of Supervillains organized by Outsider, representing the Crime Syndicate of America.

In 2016, under the DC Rebirth banner, Magpie was again singled out as an adversary for Batman and Catwoman. Later, in the evolving landscape of DC Comics, she was also integrated into the notorious Suicide Squad.
