Agatha All Along is a Marvel miniseries created by Jac Schaeffer, streaming exclusively on Disney+. It debuted on September 18, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The miniseries released its first three episodes, with new episodes available weekly until October 30. This series is a spin-off from WandaVision, focusing on Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn.
The show features new characters while revisiting familiar ones, including Nicholas Scratch, Agatha’s long-lost son. His character is introduced in Episode 1, “Seekest Thou the Road,”with further details about his storyline revealed as the series advances.
Prior to the events of Agatha All Along, Nicholas Scratch had a complex and mysterious background. According to episode 3, “Through Many Miles/Of Tricks and Trials,” there are implications that Agatha may have sacrificed her son to acquire the Darkhold.
In Marvel comics, Nicholas was raised in New Salem, Colorado—a hidden magical community. Agatha chose to leave him among humans, resulting in Nicholas becoming a formidable warlock. As an adult, he fathered a group known as the Salem Seven.
The official synopsis of the miniseries states:
“In Agatha All Along, the notorious Agatha Harkness finds herself powerless after a mysterious goth Teen aids in breaking her free from a distorted spell. Her interest grows when he implores her to guide him on the legendary Witches’ Road—a magical gauntlet of trials that, if passed, grants a witch what they seek.”
It continues:
“Together, Agatha and this enigmatic Teen gather a desperate coven and embark down, down, down The Road…”
Agatha All Along: Delving into Agatha Harkness’ Son Nicholas Scratch
Nicholas Scratch plays a pivotal role in both the comics and the MCU. Initially introduced as an antagonist in 1970s Fantastic Four comics, Nicholas was born in the magical town of New Salem, where he grew up harnessing immense powers.
While his character has not yet physically appeared in Agatha All Along, his existence is hinted at through various elements such as his childhood room, drawings, and an image displayed in Agnes O’Connor’s office. Agatha Harkness’ pendant may even contain a lock of his hair. His absence, coupled with suggestions of a tragic fate, enhances Agatha’s villain characterization in the series. The strained relationship between Agatha and Nicholas arose from her decision to leave him behind, leading to his transformation into a powerful warlock filled with anger towards her.
In Agatha All Along, hints of Nicholas’s narrative have surfaced but remain incomplete. In episode 1, Agnes mentions a boy named Nicky, serving as a subtle clue. Furthermore, the Teen character played by Joe Locke could be interconnected with Nicholas Scratch.
The dark magic that Nicholas dabbled in adds another layer to his intriguing backstory. For a time, he was affiliated with Mephisto—the red demon from the Marvel Universe. After being banished to Hell, he entered a pact to serve Mephisto, leading to dire consequences.
When Agatha crosses paths with the Teen, there appears to be an uncanny connection since he is unable to speak about himself due to magical silence. This suggests a more intricate relationship with Agatha’s son, Nicholas Scratch.
As Agatha emerges from Wanda’s spell, she might uncover the truth about her son and how his powers could influence events in Westview. Previously, Agatha possessed the Darkhold before Wanda Maximoff seized it during WandaVision. Her yearning to reclaim the book hints at a deeper link to her lost son.
In the third episode, while at Witches Road, Jennifer Kale cautions the Teen to be wary of Agatha. Her claim that Agatha may have “exchanged her son for the book of the damned”sounds more like speculation lacking concrete evidence.
Moreover, in the second episode, Jennifer Kale humorously asks Agatha whether the Teen is “another child sacrifice,”raising further questions about Nicholas’s fate—whether he still exists or if something darker transpired.
According to the comics, Nicholas leads the Salem Seven, a group of magically enabled individuals who ultimately turn against Agatha. The Agatha All Along series effectively integrates Nicholas Scratch’s legacy into the MCU, leaving audiences curious about his destiny.
