The latest Pokemon TCG Pocket expansion, titled Triumphant Light, has introduced several formidable cards that are quickly becoming essential in competitive decks. With the highly anticipated Emblem Event on the horizon, where players must secure five consecutive victories to reach the highest tiers, many are meticulously crafting strategies. As ranked matches for Pokemon TCG Pocket are set to commence, players are diligently testing various combinations to dominate the current meta or to counter popular decks using unexpected cards. Among the stars of this new set is Arceus Ex, which features a potent attack capable of inflicting up to 130 damage. However, it also carries a notable vulnerability that can be easily exploited by an A2a uncommon card.
Despite the Triumphant Light set comprising only 75 cards, it has introduced several high-impact options, including Leafeon Ex, Irida, and Shaymin with Sky Support. Arceus Ex stands out for its remarkable versatility, allowing it to utilize any type of Energy provided it has three attached. This versatility has enabled decks like Dialga Ex to flourish with the inclusion of Arceus Ex, prompting players to seek strategies to overcome this powerhouse. Surprisingly, one of the effective counters has emerged in the form of the new uncommon Sudowoodo.
How Sudowoodo from Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Triumphant Light is Reshaping The Meta

Sudowoodo’s new iteration in the Triumphant Light set is making waves due to its attack, Fighting Headbutt, which requires only one Energy. This attack inflicts 20 damage, increasing to 30 more if targeting an Ex Pokémon. Thanks to Arceus Ex’s weakness to Fighting-types, a single attack from Sudowoodo can deal an impressive 70 damage. This makes Sudowoodo a formidable counter not just to Arceus Ex, but to many other Ex cards that populate the current meta.
Moreover, incorporating a Lucario Fighting deck can amplify Sudowoodo’s capabilities. With its Fighting Coach ability, Lucario boosts the damage of all Fighting-type Pokémon’s attacks by 20. If two Lucarios are on the bench and Sudowoodo is active, it can potentially deal 90 damage to any Ex Pokémon it targets. This total includes additional buffs from trainers like Giovanni. In optimal conditions, a well-supported Sudowoodo could inflict up to 120 damage against Arceus Ex, ensuring a knockout if Arceus attempts a retaliatory strike while equipped with a Rocky Helmet.
Why Sudowoodo is Valuable Beyond Just Countering Arceus Ex
While the scenario described above might seem ideal, Sudowoodo’s base damage of 70 for a single Energy against one of the meta’s strongest Pokémon is significant in its own right. However, it does have vulnerabilities; its Grass-type weakness exposes it to threats from Leafeon Ex and Celebi Ex, both of which can potentially knock it out easily. Leafeon Ex can eliminate Sudowoodo outright with a Solar Beam, while Celebi Ex can achieve a quick knock out with just two Energy under the right conditions.
Nonetheless, Sudowoodo’s capacity to inflict considerable damage against a majority of Ex cards in the current meta cannot be understated. With merely one Lucario on the bench, Sudowoodo has the potential to knock out many Ex Pokémon in just two hits. Furthermore, its ability to start dealing 50 damage on the first turn (if the opponent takes the initial turn) makes it an outstanding choice for any Fighting-type deck. While integrating Sudowoodo into multi-type decks can prove challenging due to the restrictions on Energy types, the Fighting-type is in an advantageous position right now. The forthcoming ranked matches in Pokemon TCG Pocket may very well influence the meta, and Sudowoodo is likely to play a crucial role in that evolution.
