Uncertain Release Update for Wind River 2: Star Confirms Two Years Since Filming Wrapped on Taylor Sheridan Sequel

Wind River 2 recently garnered attention as star Kali Reis shared her thoughts on the highly anticipated sequel. Following the acclaim of Taylor Sheridan’s original film, Wind River, released in 2017, news broke in 2022 about a planned follow-up directed by Kari Skogland. This sequel, titled Wind River: The Next Chapter, is expected to center on U. S.Fish & Wildlife Service officer Chip Hanson, played by Martin Sensmeier. The narrative will unfold as he collaborates with the FBI to investigate a series of ritualistic murders occurring on a Native American reservation. Despite completing filming in 2023, updates regarding the film’s progress have been scarce.

During a recent interview with ScreenRant at the Sundance Film Festival, while promoting her new movie Rebuilding, Kali Reis expressed her uncertainty about Wind River 2. Although she conveyed her excitement for the sequel, she admitted a lack of information regarding its release timeline. Below is Reis’ statement:

You know just as much as I do, unfortunately. I am really excited about Wind River 2, as well. So just keep your eye out for it, and I can’t wait to share it with the world.

Reis most recently appeared alongside Jodie Foster in HBO’s True Detective: Night Country.

Is Wind River 2 Facing Challenges?

The reasons behind the delays concerning Wind River 2 remain somewhat ambiguous. It may be a situation where the film requires significant reshoots, although there have been no reports of additional filming activities. Given that two years have passed since principal photography concluded, the ongoing silence surrounding the project raises questions about its editing phase or potential behind-the-scenes complications. Such prolonged delays typically raise concerns about the project’s viability.

When Wind River 2 is finally released, it will undoubtedly carry high expectations, given the critical and commercial success of its predecessor. The original Wind River, which starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, boasted an impressive 87% critic rating and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was lauded for its gripping mystery, strong performances, and immersive atmosphere, achieving a remarkable box office gross of $43 million on a modest budget of just $11 million. It’s noteworthy that Taylor Sheridan did not return to pen the sequel; the screenplay is instead crafted by Patrick Massett and John Zinman.

In addition to his work on Wind River, Sheridan is renowned for creating the Yellowstone universe and is credited for acclaimed films such as Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016).

It comes as no surprise that Reis, despite her central role in the franchise, lacks detailed inside knowledge about Wind River 2. However, her expressed uncertainty does little to boost confidence in the project. On a brighter note, the sequel boasts a talented cast featuring Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood, Alan Ruck, and Gil Birmingham, with Birmingham and Sensmeier reprising their roles from the original film. Their return raises hopes that key themes from Sheridan’s narrative will continue to resonate in the sequel.

With filming having wrapped two years ago, fans may expect more information regarding Wind River 2 in the coming months, setting the stage for a potential release later this year. However, as the wait continues, so too do the concerns surrounding Wind River 2.
