Despite *Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man* aiming to delve deeper into Peter Parker’s backstory, Marvel Studios has yet to fully explore the character’s origin within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).The series debuted on January 29, introducing viewers to an alternate universe featuring a new version of Spider-Man, voiced by Hudson Thames from *What If…?*.This reimagined Spider-Man embarks on an adventure that diverges from Tom Holland’s portrayal, although it stops short of fully recounting Peter Parker’s origins.
The Untold Origin of Spider-Man
Limited Portrayal of Peter Parker’s Origins

In the premiere, we see an unpowered Peter Parker preparing for his first day at Midtown High School, only to be caught in the chaos of Doctor Strange’s battle with a Symbiote. The critical moment arrives when he is bitten by a spider; however, the story skips ahead just after this pivotal event. Instead of diving into the consequences and transformations Peter experiences post-bite, viewers are presented with the narrative phrase “A Few Months Later, ”bypassing crucial aspects of his metamorphosis into Spider-Man. This left many fans yearning for a more comprehensive depiction of his journey.
Indeed, while the spider bite remains a critical moment in Spider-Man’s lore, the MCU still has not adequately addressed the subsequent events that influence Peter’s decision to embrace his superhero identity. Notably, Uncle Ben’s prior death complicates this narrative; Marvel has hesitated to represent these formative experiences in greater detail, even as over a decade has passed since such stories were last vividly portrayed.
The Time Is Right for Spider-Man’s Origin Revisited
Last On-Screen Origins: A Decade Ago

Back in 2017, Marvel’s Kevin Feige stated that Tom Holland’s portrayal would not include the character’s origin story, as it had been addressed in prior adaptations including 2002’s *Spider-Man* and *The Amazing Spider-Man* in 2012. Initially, this rationale held water; however, over 13 years since Andrew Garfield donned the Spider-Man suit, the MCU has yet to take a fresh approach to this narrative. The current depictions, especially in *Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man*, offer a unique opportunity to reframe Peter Parker’s origins.
[Spider-Man: Homecoming] will not be an origin story. But, with great power comes great responsibility. It is inherent to who [Peter Parker’s] character is. But we want to reveal it in different ways and spend much more time focusing on this young high school kid in the MCU dealing with his powers. There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet.
Both Holland’s Spider-Man and Thames’ new interpretation possess divergent backgrounds, presenting Marvel with a chance to craft a novel tale of Spider-Man’s beginning. Unfortunately, the studio seems to overlook this momentous opportunity to tell a fresh narrative filled with uncharted territory. With the progression of the MCU, it remains to be seen whether there will be further exploration into these earlier experiences that shape who Peter Parker becomes.
