Congratulations on conquering Cloudspire and making your entrance into the breathtaking Snowfall Palace in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Here, you will encounter a variety of enemies alongside familiar faces like Panda, the Plain Warrioress, and the formidable Mistress of the Night Huang Yan. Initially appearing non-threatening, Huang Yan reveals her true self beneath the palace, presenting quite the challenge.
While the encounter with Huang Yan might not be the toughest battle you face, her capabilities can still pose significant issues, especially during her chaotic second phase. This guide aims to equip you with essential strategies and insights to successfully defeat the Mistress of the Night.
Huang Yan Boss Encounter Guide
Mistress of the Night Huang Yan serves as a notable character and boss within the Snowfall Palace of WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers. Although she does not wield a deadly sword like Commander Honglan, her spellcasting and potent kicks can still deal considerable damage, making her a formidable foe.
Her kick attacks are particularly perilous; recovering from one can often lead to being knocked down by another, an experience I unfortunately encountered several times. Her unpredictable second phase introduces a challenging dynamic as she frequently morphs into the white wolf scarf she wears, complicating the battle even further.
In the following sections, we will delve into Huang Yan’s moveset, effective strategies to defeat her, and the rewards awaiting players after her defeat.
Mistress of the Night Huang Yan Moveset
Prepare yourself for another challenge featuring Frostbite and Corruption influences, as Huang Yan employs a variety of spells that inflict both effects on her opponents. It’s advisable to carry consumable items that help mitigate these effects, though consistent dodging can mitigate the need for them.
During her first phase, Huang Yan’s attack patterns are straightforward yet frustrating. Her melee capabilities consist mainly of kicks and stomps, and she uses her lantern to cast spells from a distance. Attempting to parry her attacks won’t work as she doesn’t utilize traditional weaponry.

Players focusing on melee builds should engage Huang Yan continuously while evading her kicks. In contrast, spellcasters may find the battle more manageable, as Huang Yan lacks rapid movements typical of sword-wielding bosses. However, it’s important to build up your Skyborn Might, as doing so can take time.
Initially, Huang Yan will use kick combos when approached and fling Corruption-inflicting projectiles—ranging from books to ornaments—from around the arena. These projectiles can be dodged effectively, providing opportunities to charge your Skyborn Might while maintaining distance. Additionally, she may create larger Corruption orbs that fire smaller orbs towards you, but these, too, move slowly and are easily avoided.
To close the gap, Huang Yan occasionally conjures a Frost cloud, then vanishes, reappearing near you. Be vigilant, as her immediate follow-up can include a kick. This attack is signaled by her lifting her leg, offering you a moment to dodge.
Her melee assault patterns vary; at times, she lunges toward you, combining her kicks with a finishing stomp. Although this combo creates openings for counterattacks, remain cautious of her stomp strikes.
Huang Yan also employs a Frost breath attack, which, despite its reach, is less menacing than her other techniques. You can easily sidestep it and go on the offensive if you’re positioned correctly.

Upon depleting approximately half of her health, Huang Yan enters her second phase, wherein she shifts into her wolf scarf form and flies around the room, delivering powerful Frost attacks. When you see her wolf form tilt back, it’s time to dodge swiftly to the side to avoid her plunge attack.
Following her tumultuous dives, she will revert to her human form but retain her ability to transform into a wolf intermittently. This fast-paced aerial combat can complicate your attempts to counterattack, so it’s wise to reserve your Skyborn Might to strike during her human form transitions.
Best Strategies for Defeating Huang Yan
There are two primary approaches to combat Mistress of the Night Huang Yan: melee and magic strategies.
Melee Approach
Other boss encounters, such as those against Commander Honglan or Liu Cheng’en, often emphasize parrying and counterattacks. However, this tactic won’t apply to Huang Yan due to her unconventional weaponry. Instead, melee fighters should prioritize relentless assaults during openings, which are plentiful in this encounter.
Cumulatively attacking Huang Yan builds her Obliterate value, eventually enabling you to unleash an Obliterate Strike for significant damage. If you can land a backstab at the end of her combos, you might achieve this strike immediately.
Long-reach melee weapons, like the Lashing Whip Longsword or Steampowered Spear, are particularly effective, allowing you to maintain distance while executing attacks swiftly.
Magic Approach
For those favoring magic, I frequently recommend combining spells with Alacrity—a technique that mitigates incoming damage while casting. While this approach generally thrives against faster bosses, it may not be necessary here due to Huang Yan’s slower attacks, especially if you manage to keep your distance.
The Astral Blade One-Handed Sword is an excellent choice, as it regenerates Skyborn Might rapidly while dealing appreciable spell damage compared to the Darkfrost Edge. Be sure to select spells wisely and unlock relevant Skill Nodes in the Impetus Repository to enhance damage capabilities, whether opting for Magic or Feathering skills.
Playing strategically around Huang Yan while your Skyborn Might regenerates is key. Once prepared, unleash your chosen spell. If your spell has Alacrity, it adds an extra layer of protection, and choosing spells that inflict the same status ailment will accelerate effect buildup.
