Ultimate Guide to the Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon in Destiny 2

Comprehensive Guide to Destiny 2’s Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon

In the expansive universe of Destiny 2, dungeons have consistently stood out as integral components, offering engaging and challenging gameplay. Among these, Ghosts of the Deep stands as one of the more formidable dungeons, featuring complex puzzles and boss battles that necessitate keen memorization and strategic planning. This dungeon plunges players into the treacherous methane oceans of Titan, where you aim to thwart a Lucent Hive rite.

Initially introduced in the Season of the Deep, as part of the Lightfall expansion on May 23, 2023, this guide aims to explore the nuances of this dungeon as part of the larger Rite of the Nine guide.

While the mechanics remain consistent with the original version found in the Legends tab, completing tasks such as the “In Memoriam”Triumph may yield valuable rewards, including the coveted Navigator Exotic Trace Rifle.

First Encounter – Break The Ritual

Introducing Hive Runes

List of Hive Runes

Throughout Ghosts of the Deep, players will encounter various Hive symbols. To simplify communication, this guide employs community-accepted nicknames for these runes. Feel free to devise your own terms, but consistency can aid overall comprehension.

Walkthrough

Initial Encounter Map

Your journey begins in Titan’s Arcology.Vehicles are at your disposal, enhancing mobility. The new Gryphon vehicle adds an exciting element with its unique secondary fire feature.

Approach a prominent locked door, which is shielded by Hive magic and adorned with a ritual circle surrounded by thrall statues. Your mission is to imbue these statues with a “Vestige of Light.”Gather your teammates and initiate the encounter.

Watch out for the Soulfire Binder, an orange-bar Ogre that spawns intermittently near the ritual area. Defeating this Ogre will produce a pool of hive goop, providing direction for your next objectives.

As you push forward, encounter a group of Hive soldiers and Wizards.Defeating these foes will unveil an alternate route.

Defeating Hive in First Encounter

Continue on, where you’ll identify a floating Hive symbol.Engage and defeat the Lightbearer present with the Hive soldiers. Crushing the Hive Ghost will yield a Vestige of Light, lasting approximately a minute and a half.

Remember to note the Hive symbol that you discovered; let’s use “E”as an example.

Hive Symbol in First Encounter

Return to the ritual circle for a showdown with a Veilweaver Wizard. Defeating this Wizard will drop a Deepsight illusion, revealing the runes on each thrall statue.

Using the Vestige of Light you obtained, deposit it into the statue that corresponds with the memorized symbol, in this case, “E.”Successfully depositing the correct rune will chime; failure to do so results in instant death and a restart of the process.

After completing this routine for four statues, the encounter concludes.

Loadout Options

This initial encounter is not particularly overwhelming in terms of enemy density, with the main threats emerging from the Ogres and Lightbearer enemies.

Your loadout should reflect your comfort level; however, emphasize survivability and add-clearing-focused strategies.

Here, we present two recommended builds for each class: one optimized for free players (using only Light subclasses) and another tailored for players with access to Dark and Prismatic subclasses through expansions.

These recommendations should serve as a foundation; feel free to adapt based on personal preference. A Destiny Item Manager link accompanies each build.

Traversal – Explore The Wreckage

Walkthrough

Environment Overview

After securing your loot, familiarize yourself with the environment by navigating through an array of open doors and passages.

Make your way onto platforms, maneuver through a broken grate, and dive into an expansive tube. Progress downwards through catwalks until you enter a large chamber filled with adversaries.

Eliminate these foes to pave the way for further progress. Once you reach the floor, you’ll encounter a pool leading to an underwater expanse. Prepare to explore the depths of the methane ocean.

For players unfamiliar with the Deep Dives from Season of the Deep, pay attention to your Pressure Resistance meter that depletes while diving.Letting it hit zero will cause damage and ultimately lead to your demise.

Exploring Underwater Evironment

To evade the crushing pressure of the deep ocean, locate air bubbles that also function as navigational guides. Interacting with these bubbles replenishes your Pressure Resistance, providing an area-of-effect (AOE) benefit to teammates when timed appropriately.

This underwater traversal segment is straightforward. Ever onward, you’ll eventually reach the seabed, transitioning between underwater routes and regular terrains, with options to engage or bypass enemies as you see fit.

Enter the dilapidated Hive structure, completing a series of underwater parkour segments. Move through the area while dispatching adds, then prepare for a chase by Ecthar.

Second Encounter – Ecthar, The Shield Of Savathun

Walkthrough

Ecthar Boss Encounter

Ecthar, a Lucent Lightbearer Knight, will be your main adversary in this phase. Commence the encounter by disrupting the Acolytes performing a cult ritual at the center.

With the encounter initiated, prepare for waves of enemies.Confront and defeat the three yellow-bar Blistered Knights that will trigger an Ogre to spawn on the platform at the furthest end of the arena.

Second Encounter Overview

Upon slaying the Ogre, a Deepsight illusion will emerge nearby the Rally Banner. This illusion reveals three distinct symbols on the discs suspended from the arena’s walls, which you will need to memorize.

For example, let’s imagine the revealed symbols are “E, ””Spider, ”and “Burger.”

Symbols for Second Encounter

During this phase, your next step is to jump into any of the four pools scattered around the arena. Navigate this underwater section while avoiding Ecthar’s grueling chase.

His attacks will diminish your Pressure Resistance meter, so stay alert and vigilant!

Ecthar's Encounter Mechanics

Your objective is to locate and interact with the symbols. Confirm your success with a chime; an incorrect rune selection will result in your demise.

Post completion, revisit the arena to confront a Lightbearer Wizard for each correctly interacted symbol. Crushing these Wizards’ Ghosts grants you Vestiges of Light that need to be deposited at three Hive statues around the arena.

Subsequently, a Wellkeeper Knight will spawn.Killing this Knight creates a pool of Hive Light, which initiates your damage phase.

As a Lightbearer, Ecthar bears a protective shield, and breaking this shield is crucial for dealing any significant damage.

During the damage phase, Ecthar will be aggressive, using his Void shield for attacks. You can either keep your distance or engage him in melee, depending on your play style.

Continue this pattern until Ecthar is defeated. Remember, as a Lucent Hive adversary, he can respawn unless you crush his Ghost once defeated!

Loadout Second Encounter

This encounter is intense due to the high add-density combined with formidable enemies such as Thrall, Acolytes, Knights, and Ogres.

  • Lament for close-range engagements; use the combo: light, light, light, heavy.
  • Legend of Acrius—strong but requires 240 Spoils of Conquest for procurement.
  • LegendaryVortex Swords, especially those with Wolfpack Rounds.
  • Any Trench Barrel or One-Two Punch shotgun, pairing with Synthoceps melee attacks if applicable.

Continue To Descend

Walkthrough

Following your victory over Ecthar, it’s time to gather your gains and keep moving through additional underwater passages.

The traversal aspect may become monotonous, but it remains manageable and straightforward.

Eventually, you will uncover a vast cathedral area, populated with more Shriekers and Wizards. Defeat these enemies to progress.

Upon reaching a gazebo, expect to confront several adds and a mini-boss Ogre. Look for a bonus chest atop the structure.

Once success is achieved, drop through a hole leading to the final encounter set within an open cove marked by the remains of Oryx, the Taken King.

Third Encounter – Simmumah Ur-Nokru, Lucent Necromancer

Walkthrough

Final Boss Fight

Your final adversary is Simmumah Ur-Nokru, who seeks to resurrect Oryx using a Hive Ghost. This encounter tends to be lengthy, requiring setup time before engaging in damage phases. Maintain vigilance and prioritize survival throughout.

After you rally, begin the fight by crushing the Hive Ghost to interrupt the resurrection ritual. Enemies will start to spawn, accompanied by a swarm of Lucent Moths capable of inflicting significant damage.

Taking down these moths as they’re summoned can provide much-needed breathing room, as they will pursue relentlessly.

Simmumah's Ritual Sites

During the battle, a Deepsight illusion will reveal three glowing markers above specific parts of Oryx, including his head, chest, and hands. These will form a triangle, coupled with a glowing circle below.

Simultaneously, Vorlog, a Hive Knight, will spawn, invulnerable as Simmumah revives him repeatedly. You’ll need to defeat him while standing within the illuminated circles.

Once Vorlog is defeated, a floating ring will become visible, indicating a successful elimination of the Knight and essentially summoning Simmumah to her demise.

While Simmumah attempts to revive Vorlog, align with a glowing ring to reveal a new Hive Rune.

Repeat the process to unveil three Hive Runes. On both sides of the arena, there are methane pockets that allow for entry into a secondary arena filled with adds and a Hive Lightbearer comprised of a Knight, an Acolyte, and a Wizard.

Eliminate their Ghosts to secure Vestage of Light.Return to the main arena and use the Deepsight Illusion to illuminate a corresponding orb. Interact with it to imbue it with the Vestige of Light.

Ensure you deposit the Vestige into the appropriate rune. For solo players, handle one at a time and memorize your assignments if participating in a fireteam.

Upon successfully imbueing all runes, Simmumah’s protective shield may then be damaged, activating the damage phase.

To initiate the damage phase against Simmumah, target either Oryx’s head or chest.

Breaking her shield is essential before dealing significant damage, all while evading her projectiles and adds.

She frequently teleports, posing a challenge to consistently deal damage. Repeat this process until you finally emerge victorious and crush her Ghost to complete the encounter and, ultimately, the dungeon.

Final Loadout Options

This encounter is both tedious and crowded with foes, necessitating effective add-clearing weaponry and loadouts focused on survivability.
