Exploring Gennojo: The Charming Thief in Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
In the action-packed world of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Gennojo stands out as a delightful rogue with a heart of gold. Though he lacks the formal training and gravitas possessed by the main characters, Yasuke and Naoe, Gennojo compensates with his quick wit and a Robin Hood-like spirit that players find endearing.
Players have the unique opportunity to forge a romantic relationship with Gennojo through Naoe’s storyline. Notably, Gennojo also serves as one of the two hidden allies in the game during non-canonical play, making him a valuable asset to recruit, especially for those players who enjoy stealth-based gameplay.
Finding Gennojo
Gennojo makes his initial appearance during the main quest known as Missing Missive, where players face him in a boss battle. It’s important to note that he is not recruitable at this point. Once players complete the Lost Honor mission, they can locate him in Yamashiro, directly south of the Byodoin Temple. His presence is clearly announced by a loud commotion, making him hard to overlook. Engaging him initiates his questline.
Sake and Swords Quest
Upon your encounter, it becomes clear that Gennojo grapples not only with his thievery but also with the challenges of being viewed as a nuisance due to his public drunkenness. The villagers he aims to assist are less than welcoming, primarily because of his antics.
As you step in as Naoe to intervene, remember to choose the dialogue option marked with a heart if you wish to deepen your bond with Gennojo.
Things take a turn when a group of samurai confronts Gennojo. Perhaps calling attention to himself while flaunting stolen goods wasn’t the smartest idea. Your mission is to defend him during this unexpected altercation. While he contributes to the fight, maintaining some distance can help you focus on taking down the samurai one at a time if needed.
Once the skirmish concludes, speaking to Gennojo will wrap up this quest.
Honor Among Thieves Quest
After you’re done with Sake and Swords, Gennojo can be found near Kubo Sama’s Old Residence in Kyoto. He sets forth the task of retrieving a scroll he claims will aid his efforts in assisting the locals. To infiltrate the estate, players can either scale the walls or locate a hidden entrance to bypass the front gate.
Utilize the ‘look’ function to spot the blue icon over the chest, which will guide you through the estate without unnecessary detours.
The enemies within the estate present a moderate challenge, depending on your difficulty settings. You may choose to evade them by using rooftops and bushes, or you can engage in direct combat as you see fit. Either way, ensure you return the secured scroll to Gennojo to complete the mission.
Stolen Hearts Quest
The quest Stolen Hearts kicks off at the Hills of Meeting, located east of Kyoto. Upon arrival, you’ll find a pool of blood and no sign of Gennojo. A nearby caretaker offers little assistance, but following the river north or taking the adjacent path leads to Gennojo’s location, where he is being held captive.
To complete this quest, defeat the two samurai holding him captive. If you’re pursuing a romantic relationship with Gennojo, selecting the heart dialogue option during your interaction will trigger an alternate cutscene.
The Godless Harvest Quest
Following Stolen Hearts, The Godless Harvest quest initiates where Gennojo awaits outside Nijo Tenshu in Kyoto. He seeks your assistance in locating a stash of stolen rice he plans to procure from the Daimyo. You can easily find this hidden stockpile in a shed on the northern side of Nijo Palace.
Keep in mind, in Cannon Mode, Gennojo is scripted to meet an unfortunate fate during this quest.
Upon discovering the hidden rice, you’ll confront Tatsugoro. While he doesn’t possess any particularly special abilities, he can still be a formidable foe. If the fight seems challenging, employing heavy attacks in succession can help you break his defenses.
After defeating Tatsugoro, a dialogue sequence ensues.In Cannon Mode, if you hesitate in your response or choose the ‘Do Nothing’ option, Gennojo will tragically trigger an explosion leading to his demise. Conversely, if you’re not in Cannon Mode, you have the option to either intervene or comfort him. Opting for ‘we make a good team’ will lead to Gennojo becoming a valuable ally in your Kakushibi ikki.
As a recruited ally in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Gennojo excels in supporting players during stealth missions. At the Novice level, he can throw projectiles to distract enemies. As he levels up to Initiate, his ability transforms into a distraction for enemies just before they can spot you.At the Veteran level, his passive ability prevents alerts from nearby servants, enhancing stealth strategies.
Regardless of whether you’ve recruited him or not, each completed quest associated with Gennojo rewards players with 1000 XP.
