After completing the main storyline of Monster Hunter Wilds and diving into the post-game content, players will quickly accumulate a variety of Side Missions. One of these missions involves catching Aquatic Life, assigned by the character Kanya, culminating in the challenge of catching a Whopper.
In the context of Monster Hunter Wilds, Whoppers refer to notably large fish species, including the Gastronome Tuna and Gajau, both of which present a greater challenge compared to ordinary fish.
Ultimate Guide to Catching a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds
Your first step in this aquatic endeavor is to head to the expansive lake located in Area 17 of Scarlet Forest. Here, you’re likely to encounter Wudwud fishermen, and more importantly, spot sizable fish swimming in the waters.

Now that you’ve arrived at Scarlet Forest, it’s important to clarify that a Whopper isn’t a specific fish; it’s a term used for any exceptionally large fish. In this case, you might be trying to catch a Gastronome Tuna, which is easily recognizable by its shiny blue scales, or a Gajau, a larger fish adorned with orange spikes.
To set yourself up for success, equip your Fishing Rod along with a suitable Lure for enticing larger fish. You should ideally have one of the following baits:
- Tuff Joint Bait: Shaped like a Cephalos, it’s excellent for catching fast and large fish like the Gastronome Tuna.
- Duster Rig: Designed to attract fish that prefer murky environments, such as Gajau.
Once your rod and lure are equipped, you’re ready to fish. Be prepared, as catching a Whopper requires a bit of skill and alertness. Upon hooking a Whopper, it will instinctively thrash, and you need to move the left stick (LS) in the direction the fish is swimming to maintain control.

Failure to manage your movement increases the tension on your line, heightening the chances of losing your catch. Once the fish calms down and its struggles diminish, you can begin to move LS up and down to gradually reel it in.
A crucial point to remember while attempting to catch a Whopper is its propensity to leap out of the water in an effort to free itself. To counter this, you must steer LS in the direction of the fish’s leap and press RT to keep it secure on the line.
Just as with managing a thrashing fish, failing to control a leaping fish increases line tension. However, if you successfully subdue the leaping fish, it will tire more quickly, allowing you to reel it in with greater ease.
