Ultimate Guide to Capturing Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, players can take on the task of defeating monsters by either killing or capturing them. Opting to capture a monster not only allows you to obtain valuable materials from it but also saves precious time, as you bypass the need to finish off the creature. Capturing can indeed be rewarding, as you receive monster materials similar to those acquired from a slain beast.

However, successfully capturing a monster requires careful preparation and timing. It is crucial to identify when a monster is sufficiently weakened to be captured. This guide will provide essential tips and strategies for players looking to effectively capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, detailing the items you need to create and how to utilize them during your encounters.

To successfully capture monsters, players must follow three key steps: craft necessary items, weaken the target, and finally, deploy traps and tranquilizers. Before heading out, ensure you have crafted a Trap and a tranquilizing item—such as Tranq Bombs, Tranq Knives, or Tranq Ammo.

Now you’re ready to engage your chosen monster. Fight it until you observe signs of weakness, such as limping, or by checking for a flashing white skull icon on the minimap which signifies that the monster is ready for capture.

To streamline the process, consider customizing a Radial Menu filled with only Trap and Tranq items. This setup allows for quick access, avoiding the need to sift through your entire item pouch during a crucial moment.

Position yourself close to the monster and place the Trap down—after a brief activation period, the monster will be immobilized for approximately ten seconds. Use this opportunity to deploy your tranquilizers, whether it be through Tranq Bombs, Tranq Ammo, or Tranq Knives, until the monster is successfully captured. The moment it surrenders, you will receive monster materials, Guild Points, and Palico XP as rewards.

Crafting and Utilizing Traps in MH Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, two primary types of traps are available: Pitfall Traps and Shock Traps. Each trap serves a unique purpose, and the effectiveness may vary based on the monster being targeted. It’s advisable to carry both types in your item pouch to adapt to different combat situations.

To deploy a trap, equip it from your Item Bar and press Square (X) while in the desired location. Ideally, place the trap under the monster when it is stationary or asleep, or in a path where it will traverse. For aggressive monsters, laying down a trap as they charge can also ensnare them effectively.

While any monster can be restrained by a trap, only those displaying the white skull icon are eligible for capture.

Shock Trap

  • Crafting Ingredients: 1x Trap Tool, 1x Thunderbug Capacitor

The Shock Trap immobilizes the monster with all its parts exposed for a broader strike zone when delivering tranq items. However, it is less effective against monsters resistant to shock effects, such as the Rey Dau.

Pitfall Trap

  • Crafting Ingredients: 1x Trap Tool, 1x Net

The Pitfall Trap ensnares a monster underground, leaving only its head and upper body visible. This method proves particularly effective against flying creatures.

Once the monster is caught in your trap, you’ll have a limited time to tranquilize it. You can utilize three different items for this purpose: Tranq Bombs, Tranq Knives, and Tranq Ammo.

Among these, Tranq Bombs are your best bet for close-range applications. They also serve as the foundational ingredient for crafting Tranq Knives and Tranq Ammo, which are designed for use with specific weapon types—Slinger and Bowguns, respectively. Tranq Knives and Tranq Ammo allow for ranged tranquilizing, but Tranq Bombs provide straightforward usability.

The most effective method for capturing a monster involves trapping it while it is in a vulnerable state, ideally when sleeping. Then, simply position yourself next to the monster and drop two Tranq Bombs. Since these bombs are thrown at your feet, they eliminate the need to aim carefully, minimizing the chance of missing your target.

Regardless of the tranq item employed, ensure you hit the creature twice in succession to effectively tranquilize and capture it. Act quickly before it escapes, and as long as the monster is sufficiently weakened, success is likely.

Tranq Bomb: Crafting Materials & Use

  • How To Craft Tranq Bomb: 1x Sleep Herb, 1x Parashroom

When deployed, the Tranq Bomb will launch from the Hunter’s position, tranquilizing any nearby monsters caught in a trap. This method is most effective at close range.

Tranq Ammo: Crafting Materials & Use

  • How To Craft Tranq Ammo : 1x Tranq Bomb, 1x Normal Ammo

The Tranq Ammo allows players to shoot a laced projectile from a Bowgun to tranquilize distant monsters, making it a valuable tool for long-range captures.

Tranq Blade: Crafting Materials & Use

  • How To Craft Tranq Blade: 1x Tranq Bomb, 1x Throwing Knife

Utilizing the Slinger, the Tranq Blade can be launched to tranquilize monsters at close to medium range, providing another versatile option for capture.
