Groundbreaking Cross-Platform Releases: A New Era in Gaming
On August 26, 2025, history was made as a PlayStation title made its debut on Xbox, while an Xbox exclusive landed on PlayStation. This shift marks a significant departure from the gaming landscape of 2006, reflecting a growing acceptance of cross-platform releases in today’s gaming community. Notably, Gears of War Reloaded launched on all current-generation platforms, including the PS5 and PS5 Pro. According to a detailed analysis by Digital Foundry, players might be surprised to learn that the best console experience for Gears of War Reloaded is now found on PlayStation.
Performance Insights: PlayStation Dominates
The standout performance of Gears of War Reloaded is attributed to the PS5 Pro, which combines exceptional visuals with outstanding performance right from the launch day. John Linneman from Digital Foundry has identified a VRR issue affecting Xbox Series devices, which hampers their performance relative to the upgraded PlayStation versions.
Gameplay Experience Across Consoles
Linneman emphasizes that players who find enjoyment in the standard 60FPS mode will experience similar performance across all consoles: PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. However, a noticeable disparity arises in the 120FPS mode, where performance begins to diverge. For gamers aiming for the ultimate mix of performance and visual fidelity, the PS5 Pro definitely takes the lead.
“PS5 Pro though, delivers the best results bar none, ”Linneman shares.“The 60FPS mode now runs at 1620p upscaled to 4K, while 120hz maintains the 1440p of the other consoles’ 60FPS mode.”
Adding to the PS5 Pro’s allure, Linneman points out that The Coalition has opted for PlayStation’s PSSR technology instead of AMD’s FSR, enhancing the gaming experience in Gears of War Reloaded. While PSSR technology has its limitations, it proves beneficial in this instance, yielding a notably superior visual experience.
“In this case, a slightly higher pixel count combined with PSSR produces a significantly better overall image on the PS5 Pro, making it easily the best of the bunch when talking about consoles.”
Linneman also remarks that the PC version of Gears of War Reloaded theoretically offers the best experience, but he reassures console players that all versions still deliver a “sharp, attractive” experience. For those who prioritize raw performance without the option of a high-end PC, the VRR issue on Xbox Series consoles is a critical factor leading to a subpar experience in the 120FPS mode compared to their PlayStation counterparts.
Reflections on Console Choices
Interestingly, it’s noteworthy that the PS5 Pro has emerged as the console of choice for Gears of War Reloaded. This revelation is somewhat unexpected, as not all gamers rushed to acquire the PS5 Pro upon its release, especially considering the inconsistencies in performance between it and the standard PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. There is hope for unity in the gaming experience, as The Coalition prepares to address the ongoing VRR issue on Xbox.
