UFC light heavyweight veteran plays matchmaker, texts Chris Weidman name of next opponent live during podcast

Anthony Smith’s preferred next matchup is a fight between Chris Weidman and Sean Strickland.

Despite controversial circumstances, the former UFC middleweight champion was able to secure a victory on Saturday night. Weidman emerged victorious over Bruno Silva by technical decision, however, the Brazilian intends to appeal the result due to multiple eye pokes during the fight.

Despite not displaying much enthusiasm for rescheduling the fight with Silva, the 39-year-old wrestler, UFC light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has a suggestion. On his Believe You Me Podcast with Michael Bisping, ‘Lionheart’ took on the role of matchmaker.

During their discussion, Smith suggested that Chris Weidman should be matched up against former champion Sean Strickland next. Although facing ‘Tarzan’ would be a significant challenge, Smith believes it would be a logical fight for the light-heavyweight division. He even mentioned that he intended to reach out to Weidman via text to discuss the possibility of the matchup.

During the podcast, Smith expressed:

“Skill for skill I think he can compete with everybody in that division. But it’s just, can he stay healthy enough to put a run together… If you can get him a big name, halfway up, you can fast-track him. I love that [fight with Sean Strickland] that’s a really good fight. I didn’t even think about that, I’m going to text him that right now.”

Potential matchup between Sean Strickland and Chris Weidman

It’s highly improbable that Sean Strickland would be interested in facing Chris Weidman in his next fight.

Since his loss to Dricus du Plessis in January, ‘Tarzan’ has not participated in any competitions. This defeat was particularly harsh for Strickland, as it marked the end of his UFC title reign, which had only lasted a few months.

Ever since, Strickland has persistently insisted on a rematch with ‘Stillknocks’. Yet, it seems highly improbable that he will have the opportunity to face the South African again. Rumors have surfaced that Du Plessis is set to defend his title against Israel Adesanya in August.

Following the release of those reports, Sean Strickland took to social media to express his frustration. From his statements, it is evident that ‘Tarzan’ has no desire to work his way up for another opportunity at the title. Strickland has made it clear that he will either seek a rematch with Du Plessis or pursue a career in boxing.

Keeping this in consideration, it seems unlikely that he would be willing to engage in a battle with Chris Weidman, who is currently not ranked. However, ‘Tarzan’ is known for frequently altering his views and may potentially face the All-American at some point in the future.
