The Evolution of uBlock Origin in Light of Microsoft Edge Changes
As Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers transition away from Manifest V2-based extensions, users of the popular content blocker, uBlock Origin, are facing a significant change. The original uBlock Origin extension is no longer available in mainstream add-on stores, including Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
Introducing uBlock Origin Lite
In response to these changes, uBlock Origin has been rebranded as uBlock Origin Lite, now available in the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store. This new version is built on Manifest V3 and adheres to Google’s updated extension guidelines. However, it’s important to note that this adaptation comes at a cost; many features that users cherished in the original version are absent in uBlock Origin Lite.
Accessing the Original uBlock Origin in Microsoft Edge
Despite the transition to uBlock Origin Lite, there is still a way to install the full-featured original uBlock Origin on Microsoft Edge. Although this process is a bit more complex than a simple click to install, it only takes a few minutes to complete. Follow these steps to restore the original extension:
- Visit uBlock Origin’s GitHub repository and download the latest release tailored for Chromium.
- Extract the downloaded archive to a convenient location on your device.
- Open Microsoft Edge and navigate to
edge://extensions
. - Enable “Developer mode”by toggling the option at the top right of the extensions page.
- Click on “Load unpacked”and select the folder containing the extracted extension files.
-
- Select the unpacked folder to load the extension.
And just like that, you will reinstate the complete version of uBlock Origin, retaining all its functionalities and features.
Current Status of Manifest V2 Extensions in Microsoft Edge
Interestingly, Microsoft has not disclosed comprehensive plans regarding the future of Manifest V2 extensions. As per official documentation, there are no clear timelines for when Microsoft will cease updates or support for existing MV2 extensions. While new MV2 extensions are no longer accepted, the exact moment existing extensions will stop functioning remains unclear. Until Microsoft provides further insight, users can continue to enjoy uBlock Origin along with other Manifest V2-based extensions.
