Ubisoft and Tencent Form New Subsidiary Focused on Top Franchises

In a significant strategic move, Ubisoft has announced a joint venture with Tencent, establishing a new subsidiary centered around three of its most beloved franchises: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six. This collaboration has been anticipated over the past few months and now comes to fruition with Tencent’s substantial investment.

The new subsidiary will see Tencent invest €1.16 billion in exchange for a 25% minority stake. This entity will oversee the development teams for these iconic franchises located in various cities, including Montréal, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia. Additionally, it will manage the back-catalog of these franchises along with any new titles in the pipeline. A pivotal aspect of this partnership is that Ubisoft will grant the subsidiary a worldwide, exclusive, and irrevocable license to its intellectual properties related to the three franchises, with the condition of a royalty arrangement.

In discussing this launch, Yves Guillemot, the co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft, expressed enthusiasm about the new venture. He remarked, “This dedicated subsidiary will lead the development for our largest franchises and our partnership with Tencent crystallizes the value of our assets. It enhances our financial standing and optimizes conditions for the long-term success of these brands. Our focused and autonomous leadership will aim to transform these franchises into thriving ecosystems.”

Martin Lau, President of Tencent, also shared his thoughts on the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to deepen our long-standing relationship with Ubisoft.
