Ubisoft aims for Assassin’s Creed Shadows to transform the company’s narrative
Ubisoft’s Ambitious Shift with Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Ubisoft, renowned for its iconic franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six, has faced substantial challenges in delivering blockbuster experiences this year. Despite anticipating significant revenue from AAA titles like Star Wars Outlaws and Skull and Bones, these games have not performed up to expectations. To compound the situation, the company has decided to push back the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to early 2025, missing a critical window for holiday sales.
Addressing Gamer Concerns
In response to recent criticisms, Ubisoft appears committed to altering gamers’ perceptions about the company and its flagship titles. At a recent BAFTA event, Marc-Alexis Coté, Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed series, acknowledged the issues surrounding Ubisoft’s consistency in quality. He stated, as reported by Eurogamer, “Ubisoft’s portfolio has faced criticism in recent years for a perceived inconsistency in quality.”
High Expectations for Shadows
Coté emphasized that gamers demand “more polish, more innovation, and deeper engagement”from the titles they play, and they are not hesitant to voice their dissatisfaction when expectations are not met. He views Assassin’s Creed Shadows as a crucial opportunity not only to enhance the series but to improve Ubisoft’s overall narrative in the gaming community.
Avoiding Past Mistakes
Reflecting on the backlash from the Assassin’s Creed Unity launch in 2014—infamous for its overwhelming bugs—Ubisoft is determined to prevent a repeat of that experience. Coté noted this critical situation played a part in the decision to delay Shadows.
The Decision to Delay
“After much reflection and analysis, I recommended to our top management to delay the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” said Coté. “Our playtests and team feedback indicated that Shadows had immense potential, but I firmly believed we needed additional time to meet the high expectations of our players.”
Investing in Quality
According to Coté, the upcoming installment promises to be Ubisoft’s most ambitious yet, featuring complex mechanics, rich narrative elements, and innovative technologies. To enhance the gaming experience further, the studio is reportedly investing an additional $20 million into development costs.
Release Plans
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now set to release on February 14, 2025, and will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Notably, Ubisoft has abandoned all plans for timed exclusivity on PC, allowing it to launch on Steam concurrently with other platforms like Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store.
