Ubisoft Surprises Fans with Achievements for Classic Assassin’s Creed Titles on Steam

In a recent unannounced move, Ubisoft has introduced Steam achievements for two fan-favorite titles from the Assassin’s Creed franchise, marking a significant shift for these classic games that launched a decade ago. Players discovered the unexpected addition while gaming, soon realizing the updates were also logged on the SteamDB platform.

New Achievements for Popular Titles

The games, Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, have now joined the ranks of Steam titles featuring achievements, prominently displayed on their respective store pages. Historically, Steam users who wanted to unlock achievements for Ubisoft games were required to access them exclusively through the Ubisoft Connect platform.

What’s Behind the Update?

The motivation behind Ubisoft’s sudden update of these longstanding games remains uncertain. However, this move continues a trend for the publisher, who has previously surprised players with such enhancements. After returning to Steam, Ubisoft rolled out achievements for its acclaimed city-building game, Anno 1800, and earlier this year, achievements were added to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla—two years after its initial Steam release.

Shift in Ubisoft’s Strategy

This strategy aligns with Ubisoft’s recent announcement to end exclusivity deals on PC, a decision driven by earlier disappointing sales figures. The company plans to reintroduce various titles previously exclusive to platforms like Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store back onto Steam. This will also include the exciting prospect of launching new Ubisoft titles directly on Steam on their release dates.

Looking Ahead: Future Updates?

With the addition of achievements to Black Flag and Unity, the anticipation grows regarding which other Ubisoft titles might receive similar updates on Steam. Notably, enduring franchises such as Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and iconic Tom Clancy games currently lack such achievements, indicating potential for further enhancements in the future.
