Tips for Saving Resources in Starsand Island

Starsand Island offers a whimsical reimagining of life simulation games, reminiscent of Stardew Valley but infused with the enchanting aesthetic typically associated with Studio Ghibli. This vibrant life sim invites players to immerse themselves in a charming island community that emphasizes eco-friendly living and collaboration with nature.

However, navigating some features of the game can be challenging, particularly the somewhat convoluted saving system. If you’ve found yourself perplexed by this aspect, rest assured that you’re not alone in your struggles.

Saving in Starsand Island: A Step-by-Step Guide

To save your progress in Starsand Island, simply hit the Esc key and select the Save option from the ensuing menu. It’s a straightforward process, yet many players overlook this due to the game’s menu structure.

A common source of confusion stems from the game’s two menu systems: the main menu accessed via “Escape”and the in-game menu reached by pressing “Tab.”The clear tutorial hints at the in-game menu, but it often overlooks the main menu—where crucial options like saving and quitting reside—leaving players puzzled.

Does Starsand Island Feature Autosave?

Yes, Starsand Island includes an autosave feature that automatically saves your game every 10 real-world minutes. Additionally, the autosave triggers when your character ends a day (by sleeping or passing out) and when transitioning between the Starsand Island and Moonlit Forest maps. While this can alleviate some saving concerns, it might also frustrate players accustomed to games like The Sims, which lack an autosave function due to the potential for gameplay changes that would warrant a reset.

For those looking to customize their experience, you can adjust the frequency of the autosaves. Interestingly, this option is found in the in-game menu rather than the main menu; press Tab to access Settings and select the Game tab.

In the settings, you can modify the Autosave Interval, selecting from options of 3, 5, 10 (the default), or 20 minutes. Keep in mind, however, that it is currently impossible to disable the autosave feature entirely. As Starsand Island is still in early access, it remains to be seen if this option will be implemented based on community feedback.

Rolling Back Saves in Starsand Island

If you encounter an unfortunate event in Starsand Island, you have the option to roll back to a previous save. However, be advised that this action will result in the loss of at least a day’s worth of progress within the game.

To revert a save, press Esc and select Rollback to Previous Save from the main menu. You can then choose from a list of backup saves, which allows you to return to any in-game day for the last seven days (excluding the current day).

To clarify, backup saves are created only when you end the day by sleeping. You cannot revert to manual saves or any autosaves created during map transitions. While this limitation may feel restrictive, it is designed to provide a safety net in case of critical errors, such as inadvertently pursuing an undesirable romantic interest.
