No Man’s Sky Developer Discusses 3x Optimization for Switch 2 and Steam Deck: “It’s a Joy to Overcome Impossible Memory Constraints”

Challenges in Developing for the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck

Creating games for platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam Deck presents unique challenges. Developers often face significant hardware limitations compared to more powerful consoles like the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. Despite these hurdles, some companies, including Hello Games, are fully committed to optimizing their titles to run smoothly on these systems.

Engineering Challenges and Commitment to Quality

As noted by Martin Griffiths, an engine programmer at Hello Games, mobile platforms such as the Switch and Steam Deck require an inordinate amount of engineering resources for each update. In a recent statement on X, Griffiths stated, “The mobile platforms like Switch 1 and 2, along with Steam Deck, take a disproportionate amount of engineering time with every update we release.” He emphasized that the team at Hello Games devotes two to three times more effort to ensure that updates on these platforms mirror the functionality found on other consoles and PC.”

Navigating Memory Constraints

The principal challenge developers encounter is memory limitations. Griffiths expressed that overcoming these obstacles is a rewarding endeavor.“It’s truly a delight to constantly beat impossible memory constraints with a growing game to allow people to continue to experience and enjoy No Man’s Sky, ” he concluded. This sentiment reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry where developers strive to enhance the gaming experience on platforms with comparatively lower resources.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, developers show resilience in addressing these limitations, ensuring that players on all platforms can enjoy immersive gameplay.
