NAND Flash Memory Crisis Exceeds DRAM Issues; Samsung Implements Price Increases for Two Consecutive Quarters

Samsung is poised to implement a substantial price increase on its NAND supplies, mirroring the surge already seen in the DRAM market, primarily driven by rising demand from the AI sector.

NAND Price Increases: Implications for the PC Market

The PC industry stands on the brink of yet another challenge from memory suppliers. Following disruptions caused by AI customer demand for DRAM, NAND is now at the forefront of escalating prices. Recent reports from Sedaily indicate that Samsung plans to raise prices by an astounding 100% in the second quarter, building on a similar increase implemented in the first quarter. As a result, Samsung’s NAND pricing has surged more than 200% this year alone, suggesting a dramatic rise in costs for products reliant on these chips—and this price adjustment seems particularly aimed at the thriving AI sector.

Memory manufacturers’ negotiating power has grown to unprecedented levels, so demanders will have no choice but to accept the prices Samsung Electronics is offering.

Last year witnessed an extraordinary 450% increase in NAND prices, fueled not only by AI sector demand but also by manufacturers grappling with DRAM and NAND production balance. Recently, however, NAND chips have gained increased importance in the realm of AI workloads. SSDs, which leverage these chips, are now being utilized in mainstream AI rack systems such as Vera Rubin, where they manage extensive context workloads.

The impending rise in NAND prices could spell disaster for the consumer PC industry. Not only will SSD prices skyrocket, but system integrators and PC manufacturers will also face significant challenges in securing supplies. This scenario is likely to exert upward pressure on consumer product pricing. The current situation mirrors the evolution of initial DRAM shortages, but the intensity and speed of these price hikes for NAND is considerably more aggressive, particularly given the recent momentum behind NAND’s applications.
