The rising costs of memory pose significant challenges across the tech industry, particularly for budget-conscious PC gamers and builders. With prices continually on the rise, industry players are eagerly seeking solutions.

Fortunately, a new collaboration involving ASRock, Intel, and Teamgroup offers a glimmer of hope for those looking to build budget-friendly PCs. Together, these companies are developing a path to more affordable DDR5 memory modules, easing the burden on cost-sensitive consumers.

The newly developed technology, known as “One Sub-Channel”DRAM, leads to the creation of the HUDIMM and HSODIMM standards. This technology simplifies memory design; while traditional UDIMM memory sticks come with two memory sub-channels (2 x 32-bit), the HUDIMM sticks utilize a single sub-channel (1 x 32-bit).

For high-capacity PC builds, dual sub-channel memory sticks typically represent the optimal choice. However, in light of today’s elevated memory costs, HUDIMMs, which operate on a single sub-channel, stand out as the more pragmatic option for many builders and gamers.

ASRock has successfully integrated HUDIMM DDR5 memory support into its 600, 700, and 800 series motherboards. Surprisingly, the performance remains robust despite the halved sub-channel configuration. This design allows HUDIMMs to maintain high bandwidth while only occupying half the banks that traditional modules would use.

Performance tests reveal that an 8 GB HUDIMM (1 x 32-bit) paired with a 16 GB UDIMM (2 x 32-bit) can outperform a single 24 GB UDIMM setup. This demonstrates that a one sub-channel memory stick can effectively work alongside a two sub-channel counterpart. Furthermore, these kits are more cost-effective to manufacture, making the combination of an 8 GB and a 16 GB stick a more budget-friendly approach than opting for a single 24 GB unit.
