HBO Unveils Baldur’s Gate 3 Series, Created by Craig Mazin of Chernobyl and The Last of Us

Baldur’s Gate 3 HBO Series Announced: Craig Mazin Takes the Helm

According to a report from Deadline, HBO is set to develop a new series based on the hit game Baldur’s Gate 3, with Craig Mazin taking on multiple roles as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Mazin, acclaimed for his work on Chernobyl and the game adaptation The Last of Us, brings significant experience to this venture, especially considering his background in game adaptations, although he also has a history in film comedies like Scary Movie 3 & 4 and The Hangover Part II & III.

A Unique Narrative Approach

This adaptation will differ notably from Mazin’s previous works; rather than starting from scratch, the Baldur’s Gate 3 series will pick up where the game’s narrative leaves off. Larian Studios, the game’s developer, has specifically chosen not to pursue DLC or sequential additions, opting instead to focus on new titles within their Divinity IP. This decision leaves dedicated fans eager to explore the continuing adventures of beloved characters such as Astarion, Shadowheart, Gale, Karlach, Lae’zel, Wyll, and Halsin.

Narrative Choices and Character Arcs

One of the defining features of Baldur’s Gate 3 is its emphasis on player choice, which greatly influences the game’s story. For example, in my own playthrough, I made the bold choice to end the lives of both Lae’zel and Astarion. The challenge for Mazin and his team will be to navigate these complex character arcs, selecting specific paths for each character from the myriad possibilities presented in the original game.

Creative Team Behind the Adaptation

Mazin will be supported by executive producers Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Gabriel Marano from Hasbro Entertainment. In addition, Chris Perkins, the former Head of Story at Wizards of the Coast, will serve as a consultant, ensuring that the series aligns closely with the rich lore and storytelling established in the game.

“After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.” – Craig Mazin

New Characters and Involvement of Original Voice Cast

Deadline also indicates that the series will introduce new characters alongside the existing favorites from the game. While it remains uncertain whether these new figures will take on the role of protagonists, it suggests a potentially expansive narrative scope. Furthermore, Mazin has reportedly reached out to some of the original voice cast, exploring ways to incorporate them into the adaptation, which could enhance the series’ authenticity.

What’s Next for Craig Mazin?

As for timelines, specific release dates have yet to be announced. It is known that Mazin is slated to shoot the third and final season of The Last of Us adaptation before shifting gears to focus on Baldur’s Gate 3. Fans of the game should stay tuned for further updates on this highly anticipated series as it develops.
