Gran Turismo 7 Unlikely to Release on Nintendo Switch 2, Yet Polyphony Allegedly Tested It on the System

Potential Cross-Platform Testing: Gran Turismo 7 on Nintendo Switch 2

Despite Sony successfully transitioning many of its flagship PlayStation 5 titles to PC, several key games remain exclusive to their original platform, with Gran Turismo 7 being one notable example. Although there are no official plans indicating that this racing simulator will soon appear on PC, a leak from GeForce NOW in September 2021 hinted at possibilities. Interestingly, reports suggest that Sony and developer Polyphony Digital tested the game on an unexpected platform: the Nintendo Switch 2.

Revelations from the Games Mess Podcast

During a recent episode of the Games Mess Decide podcast, gaming journalist Jeff Grubb disclosed intriguing information regarding Gran Turismo 7. He stated, “I’ve heard that at some point, PlayStation had Gran Turismo 7 running on Switch 2 hardware.”However, he emphasized that this does not imply an impending release on the Switch 2, noting, “I don’t think it is coming. But it’s one of those things where Polyphony and Sony were playing around with the dev kits.”

A Benchmark for Future Development

Co-host Mike Minotti elaborated further, suggesting that testing on competing hardware serves a practical purpose: “It makes sense as a benchmark. If you want to see what your own future handheld needs to target, you run your most scalable engine on the competition’s new specs.”Grubb concurred, adding, “Exactly. It’s an internal technical test to understand how that scale of hardware manages their technology, especially since GT7 is designed to be highly adaptable from PS4 to PS5.”

Future Prospects for Gran Turismo 7

As rumors circulate around Sony‘s potential development of a new handheld console, there remains a potential future for Gran Turismo 7 to be accessible on handheld devices. While the chances of a Nintendo Switch 2 release appear slim, the precedent of exclusive titles being adapted for different platforms exists.

Historical Context of Technical Tests

Testing exclusive games on alternate systems is not unprecedented. For instance, Epic Games previously showcased a working PlayStation 3 build of Gears of War 3, which eventually became public. This historical context suggests that the technical testing for Gran Turismo 7 may someday come to light, providing insight into the innovative processes employed by developers.
