Explosion Incident at Rockstar North: Fire Crews Respond Swiftly
In the early hours of Monday, around 5 a.m. BST, Edinburgh’s fire services were dispatched to the Rockstar North offices following reports of an explosion in a boiler room. This incident was covered by The Herald and Edinburgh Live. Firefighters worked diligently on-site for approximately three hours, addressing what was described as “structural damage”to the building. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or casualties as a result of this incident.
Details from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service
A representative from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) provided insight into the event, stating, “We were alerted at 5:02 a.m.on Monday, 19 January, to an incident on Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.”The spokesman confirmed that operations control quickly mobilized three fire appliances and specialized resources to manage the situation. Crews ultimately cleared the area at 9:21 a.m., having secured the structural integrity of the commercial facility.
Investigation Underway
As investigations are still ongoing, the cause of the explosion remains unknown. Police Scotland is conducting an inquiry, and the vicinity around Rockstar North has been cordoned off as a precaution. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, likely due to the timing of the incident occurring in the early morning when the office was mostly unoccupied.
Potential Impacts on GTA VI Development
While the absence of casualties is reassuring, the extent of the reported “structural damage”is yet to be fully assessed. The incident raises questions about potential damage not only to the building but also to the interior workings of the offices. Neither Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two Interactive has released an official statement regarding the event. Given Rockstar North’s pivotal role in the development of Grand Theft Auto VI, it is anticipated that stakeholders, including shareholders, will receive an update soon, especially concerning any potential delays in the game’s release.
Recent Events Leading to Increased Media Attention
This incident brings Rockstar North back into the spotlight in a manner few could have predicted. Recently, at the end of October 2025, the studio made headlines after terminating 34 employees amid allegations of leaking confidential information. This decision affected several employees at the Edinburgh office, alongside others in the UK and three in Toronto.
The affected workers, represented by the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB), have denied the allegations, claiming instead that Rockstar is engaged in union-busting tactics. The IWGB has initiated legal proceedings against the gaming company and faced a recent setback when a UK judge denied their request for interim relief for the dismissed workers.
