Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will be developed using Unreal Engine 4. This decision aligns with expectations of a timely release, though it has sparked a debate among fans concerned that this installment may fall short in comparison to other titles utilizing the more advanced Unreal Engine 5.

Director Confirms Quality Assurance

However, Naoki Hamaguchi, the trilogy’s director, reassures fans that the use of Unreal Engine 4 will positively influence the game’s quality. In his interview with Automaton, he emphasized that many players may not fully understand the technical distinctions between the two versions of the engine.

Understanding the Technology

“When we first began developing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Unreal Engine 5 was just starting its pre-launch phase, ”Hamaguchi noted, highlighting that the key innovations in Unreal Engine 5, such as Lumen for lighting and Nanite for intricate detail representation, are often misconstrued as necessities for superior gaming experiences. He pointed out that anchoring the development process to Unreal Engine 5 could potentially delay project timelines.

The Decision to Stick with Unreal Engine 4

Therefore, the team opted to remain with Unreal Engine 4 early in the development phase of FFVII Rebirth.“By utilizing a custom-built graphics pipeline, we enhance optimization and simplify the porting process across various hardware, ”Hamaguchi explained.

Efficiency in Development

Having established a solid workflow through the previous titles, including Final Fantasy VII Remake, Hamaguchi stated, “It’s more resourceful to continue using Unreal Engine 4 instead of creating a new pipeline with Unreal Engine 5.”He believes this approach will ultimately result in a more refined gaming experience for players in the third and final part of the trilogy.

Building on Previous Success

Considering that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth expanded significantly on visual and gameplay elements from its predecessor, the continuity in development practices for Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 is expected. Furthermore, this experience will facilitate adaptations for other platforms, including the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series S, both targeting a steady 30 FPS performance wherever feasible.
