Apple’s latest entry into the laptop market, the MacBook Neo, is on track for remarkable success, evidenced by a significant surge in rush orders the company is placing with its suppliers to address burgeoning demand.

Apple’s Rush Orders Shine Light on MacBook Neo Demand

Reports from a Taiwanese news outlet reveal that the initial inventory of the base model of the MacBook Neo, priced at $599, has been depleted. This has compelled Apple to issue urgent orders for additional units from manufacturing partners such as Hon Hai (Foxconn) and Quanta.

As lead times for the base MacBook Neo extend to May, Apple has adjusted its sales forecasts for this budget-friendly laptop, increasing its expected figures from 7 million to an impressive 10 million units. This increase signals strong market interest and highlights the model’s appeal among consumers.

Challenges Posed by the A18 Pro Chip

Adding to the complexity of fulfilling these orders is the A18 Pro chip that powers the MacBook Neo. This chip is becoming a constraint on the overall production capacity, as Apple navigates through chip supply issues.

The A18 Pro chip has played a critical role in allowing Apple to position the MacBook Neo at a competitive price point of $599. Apple has strategically utilized leftover binned A18 Pro chips that feature a 5-core GPU, in contrast to the 6-core GPUs found in the iPhone 16 Pro models.

However, there is a finite supply of these binned chips, which may compel Apple to restart production of the relatively older system-on-chip (SoC) in order to meet rising demand. This move could further tighten profit margins on the MacBook Neo, given the increased production costs.

Overview of Features and Limitations

For those unfamiliar with the MacBook Neo, it boasts a range of features designed to enhance user experience. This includes a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2, 408 x 1, 506 pixels and a brightness of 500 nits, uniform bezels, Touch ID functionality, dual-firing speakers that support Spatial Audio, a 1080p front camera, and a striking aluminum exterior with a color-matching keyboard.

However, potential buyers should note some limitations: the device offers only two USB-C ports with differing capabilities, is powered by the A18 Pro chip, includes 8GB of RAM, and features a mechanical trackpad that lacks pressure sensitivity.
