Apple’s extensive investment in mobile DRAM is now yielding tangible effects, compelling the company to make difficult budgetary decisions. Reports indicate that the tech titan, based in Cupertino, is planning significant cutbacks for the base model of the upcoming iPhone 18. This revelation has come forth in a recent analysis from Schrödinger Intel.
Enhanced M12 Display Technology for iPhone 18
As per our previous reports, the base iPhone 18 is expected to be unveiled in spring 2027, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2. New information suggests that this lower-tier model might be where Apple implements its cost-saving strategies.
Insights from the reliable source, Schrödinger, propose that the base iPhone 18 may be equipped with an M14 or, more likely, an M12+ OLED display. The M12+ represents an updated version of the original M12 technology launched with the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 series, albeit it remains behind the more advanced M13 and M14 panels in performance metrics.
For context, Samsung consistently implements substantial upgrades in its display technologies with each new generation. The forthcoming M16 panels for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, for example, will transition from blue fluorescent to blue phosphorescent OLED material, leading to considerable improvements in energy efficiency.
Despite the anticipated downgrade in display technology, Apple will likely shift focus to spotlighting the capabilities of the A20 chip in the base iPhone 18:
“Apple will not mention M12+ in the keynote. They will talk about the A20, the camera, the design. The display will be described as ‘advanced OLED’ and the room will applaud.”
From Apple’s standpoint, the strategy of differentiating between the iPhone 18 base model and the more premium Pro variants makes considerable sense:
“Standardize the lowest viable panel spec across the two highest-volume WeUs. Absorb the C2 modem cost increase and the 2nm wafer premium at the Pro tier where margins can carry it. Let the base models fund the flagship R&D through volume.”
This approach highlights Apple’s focus on maintaining profitability while investing in innovation for its high-end flagship models. As the technology landscape evolves, such strategic maneuvers will be crucial for sustaining Apple’s market leadership.
