The London Competition Appeal Tribunal has mandated that Valve confront a substantial £656 million class-action lawsuit. This case hinges on allegations that the company levies an “excessive”30% revenue cut on every Steam transaction.

In her initial statements, Shotbolt accused Valve of “rigging the market”and exploiting UK gamers, underscoring her motive to “end this unlawful conduct”and seek restitution for affected consumers.

Claims and Allegations

The lawsuit represents approximately 14 million UK gamers who contend that Valve’s 30% commission is an “unfair price”passed on to consumers. The claim further alleges that Valve enforces “anti-steering provisions, ”which compel users to remain within the Steam ecosystem for all purchases, including downloadable content (DLC) and add-ons.

Previous Legal Actions Against Valve

Specifically, Wolfire’s complaint targeted both Valve and Sony concerning the PlayStation Store. Following the dismissal, Wolfire restructured its claims and refiled its lawsuit against Valve. The parallels between these cases led to their consolidation in July 2022. By November 2024, the combined case received class-action status, allowing it to proceed on a broader scale.
