
New Tariff Threats: Samsung and Android Manufacturers Targeted
Recently, U. S.President Donald Trump issued a warning to Apple, declaring that if the company does not begin producing “Made in America”iPhones, it would face a hefty 25% tariff. Many observers noted that this seemed to single out Apple, leaving Android manufacturers largely unaffected. However, the landscape has since shifted dramatically.
Tariff Threats Extend to Android OEMs
During a press briefing at the White House, when questioned about his focus on Apple, President Trump clarified that his tariff proposals are not exclusive to American companies. He stated that the impending 25% tariffs would indeed apply to any smartphone manufacturer, including Samsung and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) within the Android ecosystem.
It would be more it would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be fair. So anybody that makes that product and that’ll start on, I guess, the end of June, it’ll come out. I think we have that appropriately done by the end of June. So if they make that product now, again, when they build their plant here, there’s no tariff.
Manufacturing Impacts on Samsung and Other Makers
This announcement indicates that Samsung, which predominantly assembles its smartphones in countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, India, and Brazil, will also face significant tariffs if they do not initiate production directly in the United States. President Trump emphasized that while he has no objection to smartphones being manufactured in other nations, those aimed at the U. S.market would incur tariffs unless produced domestically.
