Roku users frequently encounter the frustrating issue of app icons disappearing from their home screens. While Roku has acknowledged the existence of this problem, no official fix has been provided. Fortunately, there are several user-initiated solutions you can explore to restore your app icons effectively.
Understanding the Disappearance of Roku App Icons
The disappearance of app icons can manifest in various ways, including a blank square, a flickering icon, or a camera symbol replacing the app graphic. The root causes of this issue can include:
- Startup glitches during Roku’s launch
- Complications arising from system updates
- Problems stemming from app updates (particularly common if the issue affects the same app)
- Ongoing system or app update processes
- Older Roku devices that are incompatible with certain apps
Interacting with the Blank Icon
When an app icon disappears, it is often just a temporary glitch during startup. The app is likely still installed but not displaying correctly. To check, highlight the blank icon using your remote control. If the app’s name appears, click on the icon to attempt loading it. Keep it open for a few minutes before exiting; this action should ideally refresh the icon, allowing it to reappear on your home screen.
However, this can sometimes lead to other icons disappearing, turning the situation into an unpredictable game of musical chairs among your apps.
Perform a Restart on Your Roku
If you encounter further icon disappearances while trying to retrieve a previously missing one, restarting your Roku device can serve as a quick solution. Simply turning off your TV won’t suffice, as the Roku may remain in standby mode. Follow one of these methods for a complete restart:
- Unplug the Roku’s power cord, wait for 10-30 seconds, and then plug it back in. For older models, a wait of up to two minutes is advisable.
- Utilize a secret remote button combination: Press Home five times, Up arrow, Rewind twice, and Fast forward twice. Note that this may not work on all models and is not compatible with the mobile remote.
- Access the Settings menu from the Roku home screen, then navigate to Settings > System > Power > System Restart. Depending on your device model, “System Restart” may appear directly instead of under a “Power” submenu. Ensure the Fast TV start feature is disabled for a complete restart; this option is model-specific.

Navigating to Refresh the Home Screen
A peculiar yet surprisingly effective remedy for app icon issues is to load a different menu. This approach may work since the Roku home screen typically refreshes upon reloading. From your home screen, scroll left through the various menu options and select an alternative like What to Watch or Search. It doesn’t matter which option you choose—interacting with a new screen and then pressing Home can prompt a refresh, potentially restoring the visibility of your app icons.
Verifying for System Updates
While your Roku device is designed to update automatically—often at inopportune moments, such as during Netflix usage—there are instances when updates fail to install. To manually check for updates, navigate to Settings > System > Software Update from the home screen. Running the check typically takes just a minute or two, and if an update is available, your Roku will install it and restart automatically.

Updating Your Apps
Users may overlook the importance of keeping their apps updated. Just like the system, apps require updates too, and these do not always happen as planned. Locate your app icon—even if it’s just a blank placeholder—and press the asterisk (*) button on your remote. Select Check for updates to initiate the process.

If an update is available, you might observe the app icon flickering during the update process. Once finished, the icon should reappear as intended.
Removing and Reinstalling the App
If the app icon does not appear—even if the name is visible—reinstalling the application may be your best recourse. To do this, highlight the blank icon, press the asterisk (*) button, then select Remove app. After removal, restart your Roku device.
Next, navigate to the Search menu on the left side to reinstall the app. Keep in mind that you may need to log back into your account for the app.
If the icon is completely absent, simply search for the app in the Roku store and reinstall it.
Performing a Factory Reset
This measure should only be taken as a last resort. In my experience, the preceding methods have been effective in resolving icon issues. If these actions do not rectify persistent app icon disappearances across the board, a factory reset may be necessary. It is advisable to take screenshots of your home screen for a reference of what to reinstall afterward. While usually, your Roku account keeps track of your apps for easy reinstallation, this feature can sometimes fail.
To initiate a factory reset, go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset. You’ll need to enter the code displayed on the screen.

After the reset, your Roku will revert to its original layout. Log back into your Roku account, and reinstall and reorganize your apps as necessary.
If issues persist and your Roku is unresponsive, consider employing these troubleshooting methods to regain functionality. Additionally, if you’ve recently acquired a new Roku remote that lacks a pairing button, instructions for pairing it may be helpful as well.
