Remembering Nell Smith: The Rising Star’s Legacy
Nell Smith was an ardent admirer of The Flaming Lips, and her journey intersected with the band’s after she attended their Calgary concert in 2018, thanks to her parents. She maintained contact with the band, learning to play guitar and compose music, which ultimately led to her collaboration with them when she was just 13.
In a conversation with Consequence, Coyne shared:
“Nell and I were eager to create music together and see where it might lead us. Starting with cover songs felt like a fun way to kick things off. I chose Nick Cave because I admire his music and lyrics. I thought, ‘Nell likely doesn’t know much of his work, and without any preconceived notions, she might create something simple, heartfelt, and original.’ And that’s exactly what she did!”
After Nell Smith released her take on Nick Cave’s “Girl In Amber,” the artist conveyed his admiration for her interpretation, noting that her approach allowed her to “vacate the song in a way I could never achieve.” Cave remarked:
“Nell displays a deep understanding of the song, exuding a sense of detachment that is breathtakingly beautiful. I truly appreciate it. I’m a fan.”
A Kickstarter campaign was initiated to support Nell Smith’s debut album and her aspirations to enroll in a music school in the UK, raising over $12,000 in funds.
As of the publication of this article, it remains uncertain if her debut album will be released posthumously.
