Treyarch Developer Hints at Potential SMG Buff in Upcoming Black Ops 6 Update

In a recent communication on X, Matt Scronce, the Associate Design Director at Treyarch, provided insights confirming that Black Ops 6 is set to receive significant weapon adjustments, including enhancements for Submachine Guns (SMGs). Since its debut, the game has presented players with a total of 33 weapons across various classes. However, the current gameplay meta heavily favors assault rifles, which have demonstrated superior performance even in close-quarter engagements.

SMGs are traditionally designed for short-range combat, granting players a distinct advantage in tight scenarios. Unfortunately, their effectiveness dwindles rapidly with increased distance, limiting their strategic versatility compared to the more adaptable assault rifles, which excel at multiple ranges.

This imbalance has sparked concerns among the community, but given that Black Ops 6 is still relatively new, it is understandable that enhancements are being considered. Responsive game development appears to prioritize player feedback, ensuring the gameplay experience evolves based on community input.

Potential Enhancements Coming in Black Ops 6

Scronce’s recent comments regarding weapon tuning were prompted by a user, @MVPhantomm, who identified the current inefficacy of SMGs within the game’s ecosystem. In a direct reply, Scronce highlighted that weapon adjustments are indeed on their way.

While Scronce didn’t mention SMGs explicitly, his response strongly implies that buffs to this category may be forthcoming. In addition, it is plausible that several overperforming assault rifles, such as the AS Val, Model L, and XM4, may undergo nerfs to achieve a better balance across weapons.

The recent return of the iconic Nuketown map, known for its close-quarters battles, has intensified the visibility of this issue. The unique Omnimovement mechanic allows players to maximize their mobility, yet the dominance of assault rifles leaves SMGs at a disadvantage, underlining the necessity for upcoming adjustments.

At present, no official timeline has been announced for these weapon tweaks. However, with the current Double XP and Double Weapon XP event concluding on November 5, 2024, at 10 AM PT, there’s a likelihood that the anticipated adjustments could coincide with this timing.

Currently, the SMG roster in Black Ops 6 includes six weapons: C9, KSV, Tanto. 22, PP-919, Jackal PDW, and Kompakt 92. Among these, the KSV stands out as the most effective choice, though it remains confined to close-range encounters, losing efficacy when facing opponents at a distance.
