On October 6, 2024, fans of BTS member Taehyung took to social media to express their anger over a seemingly controversial incident involving the music streaming service Deezer and a user on platform X. The uproar began when some skeptics accused Taehyung’s supporters of employing VPNs (virtual private networks) to artificially boost the streaming numbers of his songs.
By allowing users to secure their data and hide their IP addresses, VPNs raised concerns among anti-fans, who alleged that Taehyung’s admirers were participating in dishonest practices. A notable user, @chloxbright, directly addressed Deezer on Twitter, claiming the platform was enabling “fraudulent fan behavior”by promoting content related to Taehyung. The tweet stated,
“V is for VPN. Not @Deezer following this fraudulent fanbase @KTHonDEEZER instead of banning V and his VPN fans.”
Deezer’s response, stating, “We heard you,” ignited a wave of backlash from fans of the BTS star. Many expressed their discontent regarding the platform’s perceived unprofessionalism, arguing that Deezer should have taken time to investigate the claims rather than hastily engaging with unsubstantiated accusations.
Numerous fans felt that Deezer’s reply only exacerbated misinformation, leading to the hashtag “DeezerApologizeToTaehyung”trending on X. One user, @_starangels_, commented,
“This is disgusting. It’s very unprofessional. How dare you disrespect Taehyung and engage with an anti-fan account? Deleting the tweet won’t solve anything. We are ready to present receipts. An apology to Taehyung and his fans is necessary. DEEZER APOLOGIZE TO TAEHYUNG.”
“As a prominent streaming service, you should fact-check before falling for trolls’ baseless accusations. We have evidence showing that we advised fans against using illegal apps for streaming on Deezer. We are disappointed by your unprofessional conduct and will uninstall your app,”wrote a fan.
“Hello Deezer, please act professionally for once. You failed by not verifying any facts,”a user on X expressed.
“I can’t believe it! A leading streaming platform disrespects its customers and artists by making unfounded accusations. Your staff should be reassessed. Damage has been done! We may have to consider legal action for defamation,”remarked a fan.
In the wake of this controversy, Deezer deleted their original tweet, yet fans continued to demand an official written apology for the disrespect shown through this engagement.
“Though the post has been removed, the disrespect towards V and the harassment he faced cannot be undone. We expect an apology for this unprofessionalism, @Deezer,”a fan stated.
“Apologize to V… this situation is absurd. You cannot disrespect him like this!”remarked another user.
